Now, there’s a new breakout star on the horizon: Dennis Kasumba, a 19-year-old catcher from Uganda, who is using social media to make his mark in Major League Baseball.
Kasumba, a talented baseball player, has always found creative ways to train and improve his skills. Recently, he shared a video on social media that captured the attention of many. In the video, Kasumba can be seen throwing bricks in a rain-drenched clearing, using whatever he had available as his practice field. His caption was inspiring: “Quitting is not an option. Despite facing challenges with his visa status, Kasumba’s determination to play baseball in the U.S. remains unwavering. He was offered the opportunity to finish his senior year of high school in Florida, but his visa application was denied. However, the Frederick Keys, an MLB Draft League team, stepped in and made him an offer, allowing him to continue pursuing his dream, as reported by the Associated Press.
When Kasumba’s visa was finally approved, he expressed his gratitude to the United States, stating, “I want to take this opportunity to thank the American Embassy for giving me this chance.”

Unfortunately, Kasumba’s time in the MLB’s developmental league was cut short when his visa expired. He had to return to Africa, where he remains today.
Kasumba’s determination, gratitude, and resourcefulness are truly refreshing. Unlike many athletes in major league sports, he does not hold the United States and its citizens in contempt. That’s what makes his story so inspiring.
However, Kasumba’s journey is also incredibly frustrating. Despite his exceptional athletic skills and ranking in the top 90th percentile of all baseball players, his visa application was denied. Meanwhile, millions of unskilled illegal immigrants pour across the border each year, and there is support for accepting millions of Palestinian refugees.
It raises the question of why a talented and productive visa applicant from a Christian and English-speaking country like Uganda is denied the opportunity to play a full baseball season, while our leaders seem eager to open America’s gates to those who may not have the ability to contribute anything special to the United States.
Furthermore, it’s worth noting that Kasumba has demonstrated his commitment to following the law while in the United States. He entered the country with permission and left when his visa expired, unlike the tens of millions of aliens who overstay their visas.
Kasumba’s story is a testament to his determination, but it also highlights the flaws in America’s immigration system.
