Best-Behaved Best Friends

Dogs are our best friends. They want to go with us to the grocery store, the mall, and work. As long as they—and we—adhere to basic manners, they’ll generate lots of smiles and make new friends.

Strolling Spaniels

Dogs are now common in many places, including shopping malls and grocery stores. Although most shoppers won’t be upset if they see small dogs in their pet strollers, not all are happy to have large dogs such as a German Shepherd or in a shopping cart. Your dog should be with you at all times and not bark at other dogs or shoppers.

Working Woofers

You may consider bringing your pet to work if the workplace is pet friendly and your dog is good with strangers. You can use a dog gate in your office to keep Fido out of meetings, from getting aggressive with other dogs, and from disturbing co-workers. Co-workers may not be pet sitters so you will need to walk Fido and clean up after him. “accidents.” You can make sure that he or she is comfortable with a bed, water bowl, toys and snacks.

Dining with Dachshunds

Some restaurants allow service dogs to bring their pets into the restaurant, while others allow them in the outdoor dining areas. Your dog should be kept away from other diners so that they can enjoy the meal with you. Avoid tempting your pup to grab snacks from the happy snout. It could cause him to become too excited and upset other diners.

Visit Friends

Friends will be just as fond of your dog if they love you as you are. This means that you need to make sure your pup does not steal their toys or food. Your friends may have children who want to play with your puppy. Make sure you keep an eye on them to ensure everyone is playing nicely.

Wonderful Walkies

Dogs love to meet new people and dogs when they go for walks around the neighborhood. However, keep them on the sidewalk and use a harness and leash to protect them from cars and bikes. To make it easier for other walkers and cars to see you after dark, bring a flashlight. Keep your dog close to you if it is excited easily. This will help to keep other dogs from getting scared.
