Beverly Hills sues hotel workers union over noise complaints.
The City of Beverly Hills Takes Legal Action Against Union Over Noisy Protests
The city of Beverly Hills has filed a lawsuit against the union representing striking hotel workers, claiming that their early-morning protests outside two hotels have been causing disturbances and noise complaints from nearby residents.
The lawsuit, filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court, accuses Unite Here! Local 11 of creating a public nuisance and seeks a court order to restrict the protests to the hours of 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. The complaint alleges that the demonstrators have been using drums and bullhorns, starting as early as 5:30 a.m., outside the Beverly Hilton and Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills.
According to the suit, residents in the vicinity of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards have reported whistles, shouting, and screaming coming from the protest area. When the Beverly Hills police investigated the complaints, the protesters refused to identify themselves, except for union representatives like Lorena Lopez.

The suit claims that on July 24, City Manager Nancy Hunt-Coffey spoke with a union leader named Sol and expressed concerns about the noise disturbance caused by the drums, especially for families with children who were home for the summer. Sol allegedly agreed to delay the demonstrations until 8 a.m. and stop the drum beating, but the agreement was not upheld.
Two days later, Beverly Hills Police Department Capt. Giovanni Trejo spoke with Lorena Lopez, requesting that the protest noise be ceased before 8 a.m. However, Lopez did not commit to complying with the request.
According to the complaint, the following day, the police received complaints from Beverly Hilton staff and security about aggressive confrontations, bullhorns being blown in ears, blocked traffic, and up-close screaming. The suit also alleges that protesters broke through a barrier and injured a security guard.
The demonstrations have persisted, with individuals still arriving to protest.
