The Biden administration has announced new sanctions targeting Cuban regime officials. Reports on Thursday said the Treasury Department listed a Cuban military and political leader, along with the Interior Ministry Special Brigade, as those who would face sanctions.
“This is just the beginning. The United States will continue to sanction individuals responsible for oppression of the Cuban people,” Biden said in a statement.
A State Department spokesperson said the situation in Cuba has remained a top priority for the Biden administration. Meanwhile, Press Secretary Jen Psaki said the administration has condemned mass detentions and called for the release of peaceful protesters.

The U.S. has reported it will actively look for more ways to hold the Cuban government responsible, saying the communist government has failed to help its people. This comes as progressive Democrats have pushed the Biden administration to actually reduce the sanctions against the country.
