Biden administration aims to mediate school district’s adoption of Youngkin’s trans policies due to community tensions.
The Biden Administration Offers Support in Virginia Transgender Policy Debate
The Department of Justice under the Biden administration is stepping into the contentious debate over proposed transgender policies in Virginia. In an effort to assist with conflict resolution, the Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service (CRS) has reached out to local school board members offering their services ahead of the upcoming vote on the proposal.
“We are aware of ongoing community tensions in Roanoke following the release of the new model policies for transgender students,” stated a conciliation specialist from the CRS in an email obtained by The Daily Wire. “We specialize in preventing and responding to community tensions and hate crimes and want to offer support and services as you work to manage conflict within the community.”
This offer comes on the heels of two activists being arrested at a recent Roanoke school board meeting where the transgender policy proposals were being presented. It is important to note that there were no documented “hate crimes” in Roanoke, and the arrests were made due to disruptive behavior during the meeting.
Governor Glenn Youngkin’s suggested policies, finalized on July 18, emphasize the importance of parental consent when it comes to a child’s gender transition. Youngkin’s office sees the Department of Justice’s attempt to mediate as a continuation of the Biden administration’s overreach, referencing a previous incident in October 2021 when federal law enforcement was ordered to monitor parents at Virginia school board meetings.
“The fact that the Biden DOJ hasn’t learned its lesson from the last time they overstepped their authority shows a stunning lack of judgment,” said Macauley Porter, a spokesperson for Governor Youngkin. “After playing into the false narrative that Loudoun county parents are domestic terrorists, it is trying to undermine Governor Youngkin’s new initiative to ensure that parents are part of the conversation about their own child’s identity in school.”
It remains uncertain whether the Department of Justice will send mediators to Roanoke, a county that Youngkin won by a significant margin in the 2021 election. The CRS spokesperson, Amy Condra, explained that mediators can be invited into a community by any stakeholders involved or even offer their services unsolicited.
“CRS can be invited into a community by any of the stakeholders involved, including local or state officials, community leaders, or private citizens,” Condra stated. “CRS can also initiate involvement in communities where we believe our services can be of assistance.”
Despite the Department of Justice’s claim that their mediators are impartial, the CRS has shown a clear bias on the transgender issue. They conduct training programs for law enforcement officers on engaging with transgender communities and have celebrated the “Transgender Day of Visibility” in collaboration with the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division. The CRS website also prominently features content on protecting LGBTQI+ communities.
As the debate over transgender policies in Virginia continues, the involvement of the Department of Justice raises questions about the appropriate role of the federal government in local political disagreements.
