Biden Admin Sent $2.35B to Taliban Post-Afghanistan Withdrawal
The Biden Administration’s Controversial Financial Support for Taliban-Controlled Afghanistan
In a shocking revelation, a recent report claims that the Biden administration has provided over $2.3 billion to Taliban-controlled Afghanistan since its chaotic exit from the country two years ago.
The report, released by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), highlights the alarming flow of funds to Afghanistan even after the American military left Kabul with 13 U.S. service members killed and billions of dollars in equipment abandoned.
SIGAR’s findings, outlined in a report dated July 30, reveal that a significant amount of taxpayers’ funds has been allocated and disbursed to various aid organizations for the reconstruction of the country since late 2021.
“The U.S. government has appropriated more than $2.35 billion in [fiscal year] 2022 and [fiscal year] 2023 funding for Afghanistan reconstruction programming since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021,” the report states.
What’s even more concerning is that there are additional funds ready to be disbursed for future projects. According to SIGAR’s report, approximately $1.70 billion remains available for possible disbursement.
This amount includes $580 million that is obligated but unspent on 86 active projects, $557 million in funds available for future projects, and $545 million obligated but unspent on inactive, suspended, or terminated contracts.
While the money is intended for non-governmental organizations, there are widespread concerns that a significant portion of these funds has been diverted by the Taliban.
John Sopko, the head of SIGAR, has previously raised concerns about the Taliban using American taxpayer dollars for their own purposes. In the recent report, Sopko warns about the “diversion” of funds by the Taliban, specifically for projects that were meant to help Afghan civilians.
Furthermore, the report highlights the dire situation in Afghanistan, with the Taliban engaging in a “gender apartheid” and committing crimes against humanity, including corporal punishments and extrajudicial killings.
It is important to note that these revelations come just weeks before the two-year anniversary of the Pentagon’s withdrawal of forces from Afghanistan, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Afghan government as the Taliban swiftly took control.
Not only did the hasty withdrawal result in the loss of 13 U.S. service members’ lives, but it also left behind $7 billion worth of abandoned U.S. military equipment.
Since 2002, a staggering $147.06 billion of U.S. taxpayer dollars have been spent in Afghanistan, according to SIGAR’s report.
This controversial financial support to the Taliban raises serious questions about the Biden administration’s handling of the Afghanistan situation and the potential misuse of American taxpayer funds.
