Biden Admin Plays Loose With the Facts, Claims Migrant Encounters at Border Are Down
Friday’s announcement by the Biden administration revealed that more than 156,000 migrants encountered the southern border in January. This is a drastic drop from December’s record 251,978 encounters. Biden claims his administration’s new border measures are working. They are they?
It was the traditional seasonal drop that caused the numbers to fall. The January numbers are usually lower than those of previous months. However, January 2023 numbers are still lower than January 2022. In comparison, January 2022 had 154,874 encounters. These numbers are significantly higher than the January 2021 total of 78,414 encounters.
January 2023 was the first month in ten months when the number of encounters fell below 200,000. Any progress in reducing the number of migrant encounters at the southern border is welcome news but it’s premature for Joe Biden to be crowing about any level of success yet. He made the initial decision to end the policies and agreements of the previous administration, which created the Biden border crisis. He has not been involved in the crisis since then and has allowed it to escalate into a national security and humanitarian crisis at the southern border.
The Biden administration has taken two measures that are being credited for the decrease in the number encounters with migrants. Both were introduced last month. First, the Venezuelan humanitarian parole program was expanded to include Nicaraguans as well as Cubans. Each month, 30,000 can enter the United States if they have not crossed the border illegally and have a sponsor who is already in the country. They also need to meet other conditions.
The second program expands Title 42 expulsions and includes these nationalities. Mexico is cooperating with the administration to allow non Mexican migrants to remain on the Mexican side until they can file asylum claims. Do you sound familiar? That’s because it is very similar to the previous administration’s Remain in Mexico policy that Biden was hellbent to end at the beginning of his term in office. If migrants travel through another country, they are not eligible for asylum. For example, migrants who travel through Mexico without claiming asylum there would be ineligible for asylum in the United States.
Biden started to take credit for the decline in apprehension numbers this week at his State of the Union address. CBP is playing wingman to his boasting and claiming the drop in numbers is due to Biden’s new programs. It’s amazing to think that a president would have understood that the policies in place at his inauguration were effective and would have built upon them rather than tossing them aside and then ignore the situation for the next two years.
CBP published Make a statement in agreement with Biden’s claims. You all know that he is their boss.
“The January monthly operational update clearly illustrates that new border enforcement measures are working, with the lowest level of Border Patrol encounters between Ports of Entry since February of 2021,” Troy Miller, CBP Acting Commissioner, made the following statement. “Those trends have continued into February, with average encounters of Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans plummeting.”
Both the right-leaning and left-leaning parties have their objections. Open border progressives criticize the expansion of Title 42, saying it is unjust and limits migrants’ ability to claim asylum. 20 Republican-led states have sued the Biden Administration over the parole program. The claim is that it breaches the congressional limits on parole. Parole should be applied on a case by case basis, for either public or urgent humanitarian purposes. The Biden administration has adopted a blanket parole system. It does not work on a case-by–case basis.
Biden will run for re-election in 2020 and is realizing that the border chaos is a problem. This issue will be a major focus of the 2024 presidential campaign, regardless of which Republican wins the nomination. Biden is also starting to hear from Democrats now. The administration’s incontinence is highlighted by media coverage that includes migrants being bussed to and flown to sanctuary cities by border governors. That’s the point. Media coverage is meant to draw attention to the administration in order to make them take action on the Biden border crisis.
Brandon Judd is the president of the National Border Patrol Council. He said that any progress in reducing the number of migrants from these four countries will be quickly erased by the time that cartels start using migrants. Other countries.
“So now all the cartels have to do is just go advertise services in other countries and replace the Nicaraguans, Cubans, Haitians, and Venezuelans with a different population. And they always adapt. They’re very good at adapting. If you do not enforce Title 42 across the board with every single country, we’re never going to get out of this rut. The cartels will just adapt to our policies,” He said.
Drug cartels and human traffickers won’t easily give up the lucrative businesses they have going on along the border, thanks to Joe Biden. They will adapt as the administration’s methods change. Their profits could be millions of dollars. Biden is aware that his recent changes won’t solve all the problems. During his State of the Union address he called on Congress for comprehensive immigration reform. Biden’s plan includes blanket amnesty for all illegal aliens in the United States, though, and that is a non-starter for Republicans. Conservatives must stand firm and insist on Biden securing the southern border. Secure the border by enforcing the laws that are already in place.
