U.S. Customs and Border Protection Responds to Video of Border Patrol Cutting Through Razor Wire
In a recent incident captured on video, a U.S. Border Patrol agent was seen cutting through razor wire on private property to allow illegal aliens into Texas. The video, shared by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, has sparked controversy and raised questions about the enforcement of U.S. immigration laws.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the incident took place on private property. However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) defended the actions of the Border Patrol agent, stating that the individuals involved were “subject to U.S. immigration laws.”
“It is a federal responsibility to enforce U.S. immigration laws. U.S. Border Patrol continues to enforce U.S. immigration laws,” CBP stated. “The individuals had already crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico, were on U.S. soil, and are subject to U.S. immigration laws. Individuals who cross unlawfully will be subject to the lawful pathways rule, which places common-sense conditions on asylum eligibility, with certain exceptions. Those who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States will be removed.”
Melugin, who obtained the video from a source in Eagle Pass, highlighted that the razor wire had been placed by the state of Texas to prevent illegal crossings. He also mentioned that the incident is being investigated for potential destruction of Texas property.
While the federal government maintains that migrants on U.S. soil must be processed and cannot be turned away, Texas has taken a different approach. Under orders from Governor Greg Abbott, the state has physically blocked migrants and authorized the arrest of those who trespass on private property.
It is important to note that the Border Patrol agent in the video was likely following orders. However, this incident is expected to further strain the relationship between Texas and the federal government, as they have differing approaches to border security.
