According to the White House and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Biden Administration is taking action to address the immigration issue at the southern border. They are deploying an additional 800 troops and implementing other measures to strengthen border enforcement.
The plan developed by President Joe Biden’s administration involves sending 800 newly active-duty personnel to the Texas-Mexico border.
The 800 new troops will be focusing on “logistics and other functions at the border to allow more Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents and officers to return to their core mission and responsibilities.”
The Department of Defense (DOD) has already sent 2,500 state National Guard troops to assist the DHS at the Southern border.
Currently, there are 24,000 CBP agents and officers, along with 2,600 non-uniformed officers, stationed around the southwest border, according to the White House.
On Wednesday, the Biden Administration announced several procedures aimed at addressing the immigration situation. These include extending Temporary Protective Status (TPS) to nearly half a million Venezuelans residing in the United States.
This extension is intended to provide a safe haven for Venezuelan nationals who are unable to return to their country due to “extraordinary and temporary conditions.”
Additionally, the administration plans to expedite the removal of families without lawful status, increase the capacity of DHS holding and processing facilities, collaborate with international partners to speed up removals and returns, and streamline the work authorization process for those seeking sanctuary.
Following the expiration of the pandemic-era policy known as Title 42, which allowed border patrol personnel to turn away migrants based on health concerns, the number of border encounters decreased in June.
However, the Biden Administration implemented new policies to “crack down on asylum-seeking strategies” and introduced mechanisms for scheduling appointments with border patrol agents in advance, coinciding with the lifting of the public health emergency and the end of Title 42. These policies are now facing legal challenges from opponents on both sides of the political spectrum.
As the influx of immigrants continues to strain sanctuary cities across the U.S., the Biden Administration is taking further initiatives to address the situation.
