The Biden Administration has announced a major investment in California’s high-speed rail project, allocating $3 billion in federal taxpayer funds. This funding will cover a quarter of the cost for the Brightline West rail line, which will connect Las Vegas, Nevada, to Los Angeles, California.
Brightline, the nation’s only private passenger rail operator offering high-speed service, had requested $3.75 billion in funding for the project. The aim of the rail line is to reduce emissions, alleviate traffic congestion, and provide a more affordable transportation option between Las Vegas and California. It is estimated that the rail connection will eliminate 3 million car trips annually.
The trains will reach speeds of up to 180 miles per hour and can accommodate approximately 500 passengers, with departures as frequent as every 45 minutes, according to Brightline.
“California takes great pride in our ambitious status as the leading edge of high-speed rail in America. With this new $3.07 billion in federal funding, we take an important leap closer to making high-speed rail a reality in California,” said former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “An electrified high-speed rail network will dramatically improve the quality of life in the Central Valley and up and down California.”
The proposed Brightline West project will connect with the existing regional rail system in Los Angeles at Rancho Cucamonga, California, after departing from a new station near the Las Vegas Strip. The journey is expected to take just under three hours.
A group of lawmakers from Nevada and California have been advocating for federal funding for the Brightline West project, emphasizing its importance for economic growth.
“This historic high-speed rail project will be a game changer for Nevada’s tourism economy and transportation,” said Senator Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.). “It’ll bring more visitors to our state, reduce traffic on the I-15, create thousands of good paying jobs, and decrease carbon emissions, all while relying on local union labor.”
Rosen also noted that the $3 billion grant is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The Brightline West rail project, which was approved 15 years ago, has faced significant delays and downsizing. However, it recently launched the first-ever high-speed service between Orlando and Miami. The project is expected to be fully completed by 2027, just in time for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
President Joe Biden is expected to officially announce the Brightline West rail project during his visit to Las Vegas on Friday.
