Biden Admin grants Ukraine $520M for greener energy.
US Pledges Over $1 Billion in Aid to Ukraine, Emphasizes Clean Energy
During a surprise visit to Kyiv, Secretary of State Antony Blinken not only promised over $1 billion in new aid to Ukraine but also reiterated the Biden administration’s commitment to addressing climate change by providing $520 million to help Ukraine transition to “cleaner” energy.
“We’re making new investments to enhance the transparency of Ukraine’s institutions and to bolster the rule of law so that Ukraine’s democracy is even more responsive to the needs of its people and can attract the private capital needed to rebuild,” Mr. Blinken said.
The new funding includes more than $665 million in new military and civilian security assistance, as well as $203 million to support transparency and accountability efforts in Ukraine’s institutions.
Secretary Blinken’s visit to Kyiv also highlighted the Biden administration’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s long-term security arrangements and assisting with the country’s reconstruction efforts.
Furthermore, Secretary Blinken reaffirmed the Biden administration’s commitment to helping Ukraine produce cleaner energy. He emphasized the importance of rebuilding Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has been significantly damaged by Russia.
Former President Donald Trump took notice of Secretary Blinken’s remarks and expressed skepticism about the allocation of $520 million for Ukraine’s energy grid.
“We just sent $520,000,000 to Ukraine to ‘make their energy cleaner,'” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.
EV Tanks to Fight Climate Change
President Trump has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration’s energy policies, particularly its focus on combating climate change. President Biden aims to halve U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 as part of global efforts to address global warming.
President Biden’s commitment to climate action extends to military vehicle emissions, as he pledged to make all military vehicles electric by 2030.
“The Biden Administration wants to now make our Army Tanks all Electric so that, despite the fact that they will not be able to go very far, fewer pollutants will be released into the air,” President Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
President Biden’s proposal to electrify the entire Pentagon vehicle fleet has raised concerns among analysts.
Maiya Clark, a senior research associate at the Heritage Foundation’s Center for National Defense, expressed skepticism about the feasibility and potential risks of making all military vehicles “climate-friendly.”
The American Energy Alliance criticized the idea of electrifying tanks, calling it “deranged.”
While Secretary Blinken was in Ukraine reaffirming the United States’ commitment to the country’s future, back in Washington, Congress showed less enthusiasm for providing additional aid to Ukraine.
Looming Showdown Over Ukraine Aid
President Biden’s latest request for Ukraine assistance faced new hurdles in Congress as factions of Republicans debated federal spending ahead of a potential government shutdown in October.
