Biden admin surpasses self-imposed migrant cap again.
August’s Migrant Pool: Thousands of Single Men
The Biden administration in August exceeded its own limits on asylum seekers, releasing a group primarily consisting of single males into the country’s interior, according to internal Department of Homeland Security data obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.
Customs and Border Protection processed 45,403 migrants through the CBP One mobile application in August, averaging around 1,465 migrants per day. The federal government had set a daily cap of 1,450 migrants for the app. This marks the second month in a row that the Biden administration has failed to adhere to its own limit on asylum seekers. In July, CBP One processed an average of 1,473 migrants per day, as reported by the Free Beacon.
The data provided to the Free Beacon also reveal an interesting trend: over half of the adults granted entry into the United States through CBP One were men. Out of the 34,210 adults aged 18-79, nearly 20,330 were men compared to 13,882 women. In August, only 11,189 minors were admitted through the CBP One app, suggesting that the majority of men admitted through the program were single.
In order to be granted asylum seeker status, migrants must demonstrate a credible fear of political persecution or violence. However, single male migrants often falsely claim asylum to gain entry into the United States. In fact, immigration courts denied 71 percent of permanent asylum requests in 2020, as reported by TRAC Syracuse.
New York, which has received over 100,000 asylum seekers in the past year, has faced numerous high-profile crimes committed by male migrants. For instance, a Venezuelan man with an asylum claim was recently arrested for raping a three-year-old child in a New York City-funded hotel room. Additionally, 41 people have been arrested at the Roosevelt Hotel, which was converted into a migrant shelter, since May.
Customs and Border Protection did not provide a comment in response to the request.
The Biden administration promoted CBP One as a solution to address the backlog of asylum seekers at the southern border during the largest border surge in U.S. history. President Joe Biden praised the app in January, stating that it is part of a “new process” that is “orderly, safe, and humane.”
However, the app has faced criticism from the right. Representative Clay Higgins (R., La.) referred to the program as a “shell game” that reclassifies illegal immigrants arbitrarily, allowing the Biden administration to claim progress on the southern border. Critics argue that without the CBP One app, all migrants enrolled in the program would be counted as illegal border crossers.
“Customs and Border Protection expanded the number of daily CBP One appointments to 1,450 on June 30, and clearly there is no number of free spots in the U.S. that will stem the flow of mostly single men pouring across the border illegally,” said a senior Homeland Security official who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “These are numbers that in any other administration would be added to the amount of illegal apprehensions, but this president is allowing unfettered access to the country.”
Although the White House initially attributed the decrease in southern border apprehensions to the CBP One app in June, subsequent months have seen illegal crossings return to historically high levels. In July, law enforcement arrested over 130,000 illegal aliens on the southern border, and in August, that number rose to 177,000, according to the Washington Post.
