Biden admin imposes record fine on biggest Christian university.
The Biden Administration Imposes Record-Breaking Fine on Nation’s Largest Christian University
The Biden administration is taking aim at America’s largest Christian university, delivering a devastating blow.
In a bold move, the Department of Education has slapped Grand Canyon University in Phoenix with a staggering $37.7 million fine, the largest ever imposed on any higher educational institution.
The fine comes as a result of the university misleading approximately 7,500 doctoral students about the true costs of their tuition. Grand Canyon University advertised lower prices than what was actually required to complete the programs.
“GCU lied about the cost of its doctoral programs to attract students to enroll,” stated Richard Cordray, Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA). “Today, we are holding GCU accountable for its actions, protecting students and taxpayers, and upholding the integrity of the federal student aid programs.”

In a press release, the Department of Education revealed that Grand Canyon University had been misleading students about the true costs of its doctoral programs since 2017. The university claimed that the programs cost between $40,000 and $49,000, but their own data showed that less than 2% of graduates completed the programs within that advertised cost.
Furthermore, the investigation found that 78% of graduates had to pay an additional $10,000 to $12,000 in tuition costs, a 25% increase, to complete the dissertation requirement in these doctoral programs.

Grand Canyon University has strongly refuted these allegations, claiming that the investigation is a retaliation for their ongoing lawsuit against the Department of Education regarding their nonprofit status. The university asserts that they have been transparent and have provided excellent service to their students.
Despite the university’s claims, the Biden administration remains firm in its decision to impose the unprecedented fine. Grand Canyon University has yet to respond to the penalty.

What evidence did the Department of Education’s investigation uncover regarding Grand Canyon University’s deceptive practices with regards to its doctoral program costs?
Nistration remains steadfast in its decision to impose the record-breaking fine on Grand Canyon University. This move highlights the administration’s commitment to holding educational institutions accountable for misleading students and ensuring the integrity of federal student aid programs.
The magnitude of the fine, $37.7 million, is unprecedented and sends a clear message that deceptive practices will not be tolerated. The Department of Education’s investigation revealed that Grand Canyon University had been intentionally misrepresenting the true costs of its doctoral programs since 2017. By advertising lower prices than what was actually required, the university misled approximately 7,500 doctoral students.
Richard Cordray, Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA), unequivocally stated that GCU lied about the cost of its doctoral programs to attract students to enroll. This not only harmed the affected students but also undermined the trust and faith in federal student aid programs. By imposing the record-breaking fine, the Biden administration aims to protect students and taxpayers while upholding the integrity of these programs.
The investigation revealed that the university claimed their doctoral programs cost between $40,000 and $49,000, but less than 2% of graduates actually completed the programs within that advertised cost. Moreover, 78% of graduates had to pay an additional $10,000 to $12,000 in tuition costs, a significant 25% increase, to complete the required dissertation.
Grand Canyon University, however, strongly denies these allegations and maintains that the investigation is a retaliatory action against their ongoing lawsuit concerning their nonprofit status. They assert that they have been transparent in their dealings with students and have provided excellent service.
It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold, but the Biden administration’s imposition of this record-breaking fine on Grand Canyon University highlights their commitment to ensuring accountability and integrity in the higher education system. As the largest Christian university in America, the actions taken against GCU serve as a reminder that no institution is above the law or immune to scrutiny.
