Internal documents reveal that the Biden administration was aware of an impending surge at the border but failed to take any action.
Federal agencies witness a surge of migrants at the Mexican border in early September
The Department of Homeland Security was well aware of the impending influx of migrants at the southern border months before a near-record number flooded into the country this month, according to internal documents obtained by the Washington Free Beacon. However, it seems that no action was taken to prevent this overwhelming surge that has left local officials across the United States struggling to cope.
The documents reveal that Mexican immigration authorities observed a significant increase in apprehensions since May, indicating a rise in border crossings. Furthermore, federal agencies documented a large buildup of migrants on the Mexican side of the border at the beginning of September.
The White House, grappling with the ongoing migrant surge since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, is pointing fingers at Republicans, blaming GOP lawmakers in Congress for obstructing the president’s immigration reform proposals. However, Biden’s border challenges have also caused friction with Democratic officials. Cities like Chicago and New York, led by Democratic leaders, are grappling with the arrival of tens of thousands of new migrants, forcing them to consider drastic budget cuts to accommodate housing and other social services.
Despite these concerns, neither Customs and Border Protection nor the Department of Homeland Security have responded to requests for comment.
The warning signs on the Mexican side of the border coincided with a record-high number of migrant encounters in August. Customs and Border Protection announced last Friday that nearly 232,000 migrants crossed the border in August, marking a record for the year and a nearly 27 percent increase from July.
The situation shows little sign of improvement. El Paso mayor Oscar Leeser stated on Saturday that his city is “at a breaking point.” Additionally, Reuters reported last week that nearly 100,000 more migrants are traveling through Panama and Mexico with hopes of crossing into the United States. The situation has become so dire that railroad operator Union Pacific temporarily suspended service in Mexico due to the high number of migrants illegally boarding trains.
In January, Biden introduced the CBP One app as a solution to address the issue. He touted it as a “new process” that would bring order, safety, and humanity to the situation, with the expectation that illegal border crossings would decrease. Biden stated that those who did not apply through CBP One would face deportation.
However, apart from a brief respite in mid-May, illegal border crossings have continued to rise since the end of Title 42, a pandemic-era rule that allowed for the swift deportation of illegal aliens. The Department of Homeland Security claims that 1,450 migrants per month can remotely apply for asylum using the CBP One app, although the agency has failed to adhere to its self-imposed limits.
“The CBP One app was supposed to reduce the number of people living in Mexico waiting to apply for refugee status after Title 42 ended,” revealed a senior DHS official, speaking anonymously to the Free Beacon. “Instead, more people are coming into Mexico, hoping to migrate to the United States, and the Biden administration can’t process them quickly enough.”
Since Biden assumed office, at least 3.8 million migrants have crossed the southern border, setting a record.
Despite having prior knowledge of the migrant buildup on the Mexican side of the border, the Biden administration has taken minimal action to address what Eagle Pass, Texas mayor Rolando Salinas, a Democrat, describes as a “crisis.” Eagle Pass declared a state of emergency this month after 5,000 migrants crossed into the town.
Instead, Biden has shifted blame for the state of the southern border onto the Republican Party. In an address to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, he stated, “MAGA Republicans in Congress and my predecessor spent four years gutting the immigration system. They continue to undermine our border security today, blocking bipartisan reform.”
Last week, Biden expanded temporarily protected status for nearly 500,000 Venezuelans residing illegally in the United States. Those covered by this move, which is intended for individuals unable to safely return to their home country, will be eligible to apply for work permits.
What is being done by federal agencies to address the record-high number of migrant encounters in August, and what plans are in place to handle the continuous flow of migrants through Panama and Mexico?
Tinued to increase. The CBP One app has proven to be ineffective in tackling the issue, and the surge of migrants at the Mexican border persists.
The lack of action and response from federal agencies is alarming. The Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection have ignored requests for comment, leaving the American public uninformed and unsure about the steps being taken to address the situation.
The blame game between politicians is also unproductive. While the White House blames Republicans for obstructing immigration reform proposals, Democratic officials in cities like Chicago and New York are struggling to accommodate the influx of migrants. This demonstrates that the issue goes beyond party lines and requires a comprehensive and unified approach.
The record-high number of migrant encounters in August further highlights the severity of the problem. Nearly 232,000 migrants crossed the border, a significant increase from the previous month. This trend shows no signs of improvement, with El Paso’s mayor stating that the city is at a breaking point.
In addition, reports indicate that an additional 100,000 migrants are traveling through Panama and Mexico with hopes of crossing into the United States. This continuous flow of migrants has even led to the temporary suspension of railroad services due to the high number of migrants illegally boarding trains.
Despite the promises made earlier this year, President Biden’s CBP One app has failed to address the issue effectively. The expectation was that illegal border crossings would decrease, but they have only continued to rise.
It is crucial for federal agencies to step up their efforts and take immediate action to address this surge of migrants at the Mexican border. Enhanced border security measures, increased resources for immigration authorities, and effective strategies for processing and accommodating migrants are needed to handle this crisis.
Furthermore, there needs to be transparency and accountability from the government. The American people deserve to know the steps being taken to address the situation and the progress being made.
The surge of migrants at the Mexican border is not just a political issue; it is a humanitarian crisis that requires urgent attention. It is time for federal agencies and policymakers to come together, set aside their differences, and work towards finding a comprehensive and sustainable solution to this pressing problem.
