What’s Included in the Package?

The ⁢aid package consists of a ‌range of crucial military equipment‌ and supplies. Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted⁣ some of the key items, including ⁢AIM-9M⁣ missiles for ‍air ​defense, munitions ‌for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems,​ 155 mm ​and 105 mm artillery ammunition, mine-clearing equipment, Javelin and other anti-armor systems and rockets, and over 3 million rounds of small arms ammunition.

This comprehensive package aims to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities and ensure ⁢the safety of its citizens in the face of ongoing aggression from⁣ Russia.

“Every day, Russia continues to wage a⁣ brutal‌ war of conquest that has killed many of Ukraine’s civilians⁣ and displaced millions of‍ its ⁢people. Their attacks on​ Ukraine’s ports and grain infrastructure have caused price ‌volatility‍ in food and grain markets and worsened hunger and global⁢ food insecurity around the world,” Blinken said. “Russia started ‍this war and could ‌end⁢ it at any time by withdrawing its ‌forces from Ukraine ‍and stopping its brutal attacks.”

U.S. Support for Ukraine

The Biden administration has been steadfast in its ‍commitment to supporting Ukraine. Since the ⁤beginning‌ of Russia’s war in Ukraine in February 2022,‍ the United States has provided over $43 billion in military aid ​to Ukraine.

There ‍are two primary ​ways ⁢in which the ⁢U.S. delivers military aid‌ to⁤ Ukraine. The first is through ⁢presidential drawdown authority (PDA), which involves providing weapons from existing U.S. ⁣stockpiles. The second method is through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), where ⁤the⁢ Defense ‌Department ⁤contracts a defense company to manufacture weapons specifically for Ukraine.

While⁢ PDA packages arrive within weeks, ⁤those⁤ sent⁢ via USAI take longer to⁢ reach Ukraine. In the⁢ case of this recent aid package, it was sent through President Joe​ Biden’s drawdown authority.

An Accounting Error ⁢Unveils Additional Funding

Interestingly, an accounting error uncovered in⁤ the spring revealed excess money that ‌had been allocated for⁤ Ukraine by the Pentagon. ​The Department ‌of Defense⁤ had been miscalculating the cost of the equipment provided to Ukraine, resulting in a difference⁢ of $6.2 billion.

This error actually benefits Ukraine, as ‍the DOD can now utilize the surplus⁣ funds⁢ to ‌send additional weapons and resources. The money has already been committed, allowing for a more substantial aid package to be delivered.
