Biden Administration Nears Finish Line on New Rules for Gas Vehicle Emissions

Revving Up ⁣for Change: The Biden Administration’s Green Shift

A pivotal shift is on the horizon as the Biden administration gears up ⁣to enact ‌regulations this week that could significantly rein in gas-powered vehicles and accelerate the transition to electric⁤ vehicles (EVs), which notably come with a higher price tag compared to conventional subcompact cars.

In⁣ the proposed rules revealed this past May, the EPA has set its⁢ sights on phasing out certain automobiles from the 2027 to 2032 model years. According to the⁢ agency, “EPA finds it appropriate ‌to set‍ new⁢ standards… for both criteria⁢ pollutants and GHG at this time, perceiving an urgent⁣ need to address environmental challenges ahead.”

However, not everyone shares in the ‌optimistic view of these impending changes. ⁣Jason Isaac, president and CEO of the American⁤ Energy Institute, expressed concerns to⁤ Fox News⁣ Digital, arguing, “This won’t do anything for ⁢human health or pollution reduction. We’re already leading in clean air… This policy seems more to⁢ appease campaign donors than address practical energy needs.”

Chet Thompson, president and CEO of American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers,⁤ weighed⁤ in, “President Biden has‌ been determined to eliminate ⁢new ⁤gas car sales, leveraging federal and state⁤ agencies. The EPA’s⁤ new ⁢car ‍standards look to enforce⁤ an aggressive push towards EVs—posing⁢ significant impacts on consumers, ⁤the economy, and America’s hard-fought energy independence.”

The EPA underlined these ⁤sentiments, noting California’s Advanced Clean Cars II rule mandates all ‍new light-duty vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035. This bold move‌ is echoed by states like New York and Massachusetts, ‍with others possibly joining the green convoy as part of the International ‌Zero-Emission Vehicle Alliance.

The EPA’s latest proposal outlines an increase in emissions standards that⁢ would⁢ cut the fleet’s carbon footprint by 56% within the decade—a ⁢target of 82 grams/mile (g/mile) of⁢ CO2 in 2032 for light-duty vehicles.

Bolstering this ⁤vision, ‌the EPA added, “We’re aiming for tighter emissions for pollutants across the board for light and medium-duty vehicles throughout ⁣these pivotal years.”

For light-duty vehicles, we propose lowering NMOG+NOX emissions ⁣to 12 mg/mi by 2032—a 60% reduction. Similarly, ⁤for medium-duty vehicles,⁤ we’re targeting a remarkable 66% to 76% reduction… Our plans also include cold temperature standards and a PM standard of ⁢0.5 mg/mi to ⁣be tested ⁣across varying conditions.

These changes mark a historic ‌leap towards greener driving,‍ promising cleaner air and a ‌commitment to tackling climate change. As the curtain rises on this environmental act, the stage is ‌set for a future where‍ roads hum to the tune of progress‍ and sustainability.
