Biden administration’s lightbulb ban

The Biden administration is moving forward with an energy efficiency and climate agenda that includes a nationwide ban on commonly used light bulbs.
The Department of Energy (DOE) finalized regulations in April of 2022, which are scheduled to go into effect on August 1st, 2023. These new regulations will prevent retailers from selling incandescent light bulbs, instead requiring light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs to replace them. While many households in the U.S. have already made the switch to LED bulbs, less than half of them exclusively use LEDs.
The survey data on this topic showed that LEDs are more popular in higher-income households, meaning lower-income Americans will be more significantly impacted by the new regulations. 54% of households earning over $100,000 a year use LEDs, whereas only 39% of households with an annual income below $20,000 use them.
The estimated $3 billion saved on utility bills as a result of this change does not come without criticism, however. A coalition of consumer groups opposed to incandescent bulb bans protested the new regulation, claiming that LEDs are more expensive and inferior for certain functions such as dimming. The group went on to say that climate benefits resulting from the ban are “speculative, assumption-driven, and prone to bias.”
This move comes amidst more than a dozen energy efficiency rules which target a wide range of household appliances, including gas stoves and lawn mowers.
