California city urges Biden to declare state of emergency over border sewage crisis.

Local Leaders Declare State of Emergency over Sewage Spill from Tijuana

Local leaders in San Diego County, California, have taken decisive action in response to the ongoing sewage spill from Tijuana, Mexico. In a bid to garner support from the state and federal governments, they have declared a state of emergency.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors, in a unanimous vote on Tuesday, addressed the urgent pollution crisis. Their goal is to rally Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) to also declare a state emergency, which could then prompt President Joe Biden to declare a national emergency.

Proclamation Highlights Urgent Need for Action

The recently issued proclamation by the county emphasizes the critical nature of the situation. It calls for immediate attention and action to combat the ongoing discharge of water and waste from the Tijuana River into the Pacific Ocean.

If President Biden were to respond to this environmental crisis, federal funds would be expedited to repair the dilapidated sewage treatment plant in Tijuana. The facility, which has not undergone significant updates since its opening in 1997, requires extensive repairs, including new pipes and hardware, as reported by the Voice of San Diego.
