Biden at New Low in Approval Rating As He Launches Reelection Campaign
New Poll Shows President Biden’s Approval Rating at Record Low
President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign has just begun, but his job approval rating is already at its lowest level yet, according to a new Gallup poll published on Thursday.
The poll, conducted throughout April and ending on Tuesday, the day Biden announced his bid for reelection, found that his approval rating is at 37 percent, one point lower than his previous record low of 38 percent last July. In comparison, former President Donald Trump had just above 40 percent approval at the same point in his term. (source)
The low favorability levels are causing concern in the West Wing, with aides reportedly brainstorming ways to boost Vice President Kamala Harris’s image ahead of the 2024 election, as her approval ratings are similarly low. The administration is scheduling events where she can discuss popular issues such as infrastructure, and Tuesday’s video announcement featured several shots of the vice president. (source)
Biden’s plummeting favorability comes as members of his party question his stamina for a second term. The Washington Post recently interviewed Democratic voters about their thoughts on a second Biden term, with many expressing concerns about his frequent verbal slip-ups and physical stumbles. Biden’s Support Among Democrats for a Second Term is Historically Low
According to an average of polls conducted throughout his first term and published by the Washington Post on Monday, just 38 percent of Democrats said the party should nominate Biden for reelection, compared with 57 percent who want to find another plausible candidate. In contrast, former President Donald Trump had 70 percent of his party’s support for a reelection bid. (source)
