The president then recounted his experience delivering the eulogy for former Sen. Strom Thurmond in 2003. Despite Thurmond’s controversial stance on civil rights, Biden claimed that he was easier to work with compared to the current House caucus.
“I told the truth. By the time Strom left, he did terrible things. But by the time he left, he had more African Americans in his staff than any other member in Congress. He voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act,” Biden explained. “I’m not making him more than he was, but my point is at least you could work with some of these guys.”
The president concluded his remarks by stating, “Time and again, Republicans show they are the party of chaos and division.”
Biden, who has been actively campaigning in California, will be returning to the White House after a final campaign reception and fundraiser in Mountain View.
