Biden campaign urges GOP to abandon mail ballot lawsuits following Trump’s recent approval
Joe Biden’s reelection team has called on prominent Republicans to end their legal challenges against mail-in voting, especially after Donald Trump’s unexpected endorsement of the method. Despite previously criticizing mail-in voting for potential fraud risks, Trump’s 2024 campaign is now promoting it through their “Swamp the Vote” initiative, aiming to increase voter turnout among their base. Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, highlighted the contradiction in Trump’s new stance on mail-in voting, urging that all related lawsuits be dropped if Trump truly supports this voting method. The Republican National took aggressive actions by suing or joining suits in key states like Nevada to limit mail-in voting, focusing on policies accepting late ballots if postmarked by Election Day. These legal actions are principally aimed at restricting mail-in voting procedures.
President Joe Biden’s reelection team has urged leading Republicans to drop litigation over mail-in voting, citing Donald Trump’s recent endorsement of the method.
While Trump has previously expressed opposition to mail-in ballots, citing concerns about fraud, his 2024 campaign has launched a new initiative, the “Swamp the Vote” campaign, to promote mail-in voting as a convenient option for people and boost participation among their supporters.
“If Donald Trump is serious about finally recognizing that mail voting is a great option for voters to utilize this November, he should demand the RNC and his MAGA allies drop every one of these lawsuits throughout the country,” Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, said in a statement.
The Republican National Committee has sued or joined lawsuits aiming to restrict aspects of mail-in voting, particularly in pivotal swing states like Nevada that accept late-arriving ballots as long as they are sent by Election Day.
The RNC is also trying to prohibit post-election mail ballots in Mississippi, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Furthermore, the lawsuit targets Nevada’s acceptance of mail-in ballots lacking postmarks for up to three days after Election Day.
Republicans argue that advocating mail-in voting while simultaneously litigating to enhance its security is not contradictory, asserting that certain procedures for counting mailed ballots received after Election Day could potentially enable fraud.
“Democrats are playing dumb about a very simple concept: We support mail voting, but we also support safeguards to make mail voting secure,” said Danielle Alvarez, a spokeswoman for the RNC and the Trump campaign. “It’s really not hard: The left should stop its assault on the foundation of our election system and accept that Americans don’t agree with their extreme attempts to make voting less secure.”
