Biden campaign seeks new celebrity fundraiser following fallout with Clooney – Washington Examiner
President Joe Biden has enlisted David Letterman to host a key fundraising event, a move that comes after other celebrities, like George Clooney and Steven King, called on Biden to step down following his debate with former President Donald Trump. The event, scheduled for July 29th in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, will feature Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. Hawaii Governor Josh Green, a longtime friend of the Bidens, mentioned that if Biden were to withdraw, Vice President Kamala Harris would likely take his place. Green believes Biden will remain in the race as long as he feels it is winnable.
Biden camp turns to another Hollywood celebrity for fundraiser after Clooney fallout
President Joe Biden has successfully recruited David Letterman to host a major fundraising event, a decisive victory for those hoping for Biden to stay in the contentious 2024 presidential race.
The announcement follows several celebrities, including George Clooney, Steven King, and director Rob Reiner, calling on Biden to exit the rate following his debate performance against former President Donald Trump in late June.
The late-night host, who reigned over the Late Show for 22 seasons, will be joined by Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
The July 29 fundraising event will be at the home of a family friend on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, Hawaii Gov. Josh Green told the Associated Press.
Green, who has been a friend of the Biden family for many years, said Biden would most likely delegate Vice President Kamala Harris to be his successor should he drop out.
“I think the president stays in this race unless he feels that it is not winnable, or he feels that he has to hear other voices in his inner circle that he shouldn’t run,” Green said. “If the president felt that he wasn’t up to it and truly not up to it, he would step down.
Harris reportedly spoke with donors on Friday to reassure them to stick with the president despite growing concerns from within Democratic Party leadership about his ability to win the race.
Upward of 30 members of Congress, including two Senators, have publicly called on Biden to step aside.
Meanwhile, Biden has grown increasingly frustrated with elites within his party, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and his prior running mate, former President Barack Obama, who he says have been conspiring against his continued candidacy behind closed doors.
