Biden Chuckles At Idea Of Running Against Trump Again, Questions If Republican Party Will Even Exist In 2024

President Joe Biden chuckled at the idea of possibly running against former President Donald Trump again in 2024, questioning in response whether there would even be a Republican Party by then.

Speaking to reporters Thursday during the first formal press conference of his presidency, Biden fielded questions regarding his political future. CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins specifically asked if he expected to be running against Trump, which has been rumored as a possibility.

“Oh, come on,” Biden said, lowering his voice with a grin. “I don’t even think about, I have no idea. I have no idea if there’ll even be a Republican Party.”

“Do you?” Biden asked rhetorically. “I know you don’t have to answer my questions, but I mean, do you?”

“The way I view things, I’ve become a great respecter of fate in my life,” Biden added. “I set a goal that’s in front of me to get things done for the people I care most about, which are hard-working decent American people really having it stuck to them. I want to change the paradigm. I want to change the paradigm.”

Biden had claimed earlier during the press conference that he intended to run for re-election. As The Daily Wire reported:

“Have you decided whether you are going to run for re-election in 2024? You haven’t set up a re-election campaign yet, as your predecessor had by this time,” asked CBS News White House correspondent Nancy Cordes.

Biden, 78, offered a chuckle, suggesting that former President Donald Trump “needed to” promptly set up a re-election campaign, before providing a simple answer to the question: “My plan is to run for re-election. That’s my expectation.” By the time the 2024 general election were to come around, Biden would be several weeks short of his 82nd birthday.

Moments after Biden’s remarks, however, the president hedged his comment when a different reporter suggested that he had made news by “saying you are going to run for re-election.” Biden immediately interrupted the reporter, emphasizing that he had “said that is my expectation.”

Trump made clear during a recent speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Orlando that he still views himself as the leader of the Republican Party. Polling indicates that most GOP voters would vote for Trump again in 2024. As The Daily Wire reported:

A majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning voters would vote for President Donald Trump if he decides to run again in 2024.

Trump received 54% support of those who were asked whom they would back if the 2024 GOP presidential primary were held today, according to a Morning Consult/Politico poll released Tuesday. Compared to Trump, most other prominent Republicans barely registered, with the next-highest percentages going to Vice President Mike Pence at 12% and Donald Trump Jr. at 8%.
