Biden congratulates King Charles on his coronation
President Joe Biden congratulated Britain’s King Charles III over the phone for his upcoming coronation on Tuesday.
The White House released a summary of the call in the late afternoon. Although it wasn’t mentioned on Biden’s daily schedule, the president applauded “the strength of the relationship between our countries and the friendship between our peoples” during the call.
Biden also confirmed that the first lady, Jill Biden, will be the United States’ representative at the coronation ceremony and expressed his desire to meet with the king in the United Kingdom soon.
Charles became king in September 2021 following the death of his mother, the beloved Queen Elizabeth II, who had served since 1952. President Biden attended Elizabeth’s funeral in London and paid homage to her by saying, “She was the same in person as her image: decent, honorable, and all about service. It’s a loss that leaves a giant hole, and sometimes you think you’ll never overcome it. But, as I’ve told the king, she’s gonna be with him every step of the way, every minute, every moment, and a reassuring notion.”
