Biden concludes Connecticut speech with ‘God save the queen, man’

President Joe Biden Addresses National Safer Communities Summit

President Joe Biden delivered a powerful speech at the National Safer Communities Summit held at the University of Hartford on Friday afternoon. The event focused on gun safety, a pressing issue in the United States.

“God save the queen, man,” President Biden exclaimed, concluding his remarks.

However, this statement raised concerns among attendees, as Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch of the United Kingdom, passed away in November 2022 at the age of 96.

Curiosity Surrounds Biden’s Closing Remarks

Many were left wondering about the meaning behind President Biden’s words. Todd Gillman, Washington bureau chief of the Dallas Morning News, expressed his confusion, stating, “Several of you have asked me why he said that. I have no idea. Other poolers likewise have no idea.”

President Biden’s team attempted to clarify the situation, with principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton explaining, “He couldn’t do the full ropeline due to weather, and was commenting to someone in the crowd,” in an email.

Despite the confusion surrounding his closing statement, President Biden’s speech was filled with moments of humor and passion.

During his address, President Biden playfully joked about his age, a factor often brought up by Republicans who question his ability to handle the demands of the presidency. He said, “I know many people here who have been impacted by gun violence, lost someone they love, fought so hard for so many years. A lot of you are tired.” This statement resonated with the crowd, eliciting an uproar of agreement.

Adding a touch of levity, President Biden quipped, “Try being 110 and doing it again,” which brought laughter from the audience.

President Biden, who was inaugurated at the age of 78 in 2021, became the oldest president in U.S. history. He will be 82 years old on Election Day in 2024.

Advocating for Gun Safety

President Biden also addressed the frustrations of Connecticut attendees who have been affected by gun violence and are dissatisfied with the legislature’s failure to implement effective policies. He stated, “If this Congress refuses to act, we need a new Congress.”

The United States is currently on track to set a record for mass shootings in 2023, with figures from the Gun Violence Archive indicating the highest number ever recorded at this point in the year.

In response to this alarming trend, President Biden called for a national ban on assault-style weapons. He declared, “We will ban assault weapons in this country. We will ban multi-round magazines. We will hold gun makers liable. We will beat the gun industry.” These statements were met with applause and support from the audience.

President Biden’s commitment to gun safety was further highlighted by the location of the conference. Connecticut has passed strict gun safety legislation this year with the support of Governor Ned Lamont (D-CT).

Following the summit, President Biden is expected to attend a fundraising dinner at the home of donor Stephen F. Mandel in Greenwich, Connecticut, accompanied by Governor Lamont.
