Biden juggles UPS strike threat amidst union backing consolidation.
President Joe Biden Faces Union-Led Strike Threat
President Joe Biden’s commitment to unions is being put to the test as he confronts the possibility of a strike that could have devastating consequences for the U.S. economy. While Biden enjoys strong support from unions, he now faces the challenge of averting a strike that has been authorized by UPS workers with an overwhelming 97% majority.
“If this multibillion-dollar corporation fails to deliver on the contract that our hardworking members deserve, UPS will be striking itself,” said Teamsters President Sean O’Brien. “The strongest leverage our members have is their labor, and they are prepared to withhold it to ensure UPS acts accordingly.”
The countdown has begun, with the current contracts set to expire on July 31. If no resolution is reached, the strike could commence on August 1. This would be the largest strike by a single employer in U.S. history, with UPS being a massive shipping firm that handles approximately 6% of the country’s gross domestic product. It is also the largest private unionized employer in the United States.
Union Unity and Biden’s Pro-Union Stance
The overwhelming vote by UPS workers demonstrates the unity and determination of the Teamsters, which represents over 340,000 workers. President Biden has long been a vocal supporter of unions, frequently emphasizing the importance of “good-paying union jobs” in his speeches. Labor organizations played a significant role in his 2020 presidential campaign, contributing $27.5 million to support his bid for the White House.
“You know, there are a lot of politicians in this country who can’t say the word ‘union,'” Biden said during a rally in Philadelphia. “But you know I’m not one of them. I’m proud to say the word. I’m proud to be the most pro-union president in American history. I promised you I would be.”
However, despite Biden’s support, union membership has been declining for decades. The president relies on the backing of unions and their supporters, making it crucial for him to address the UPS standoff. The workers’ demands include higher pay, more full-time jobs, an end to forced overtime, and improved hazard protections.
The Stakes for Biden and the U.S. Economy
A strike by UPS workers could have severe repercussions for the U.S. economy, potentially casting a shadow on Biden’s support for unions. His economic approval rating is currently low, with only 37.6% approving and 59% disapproving, according to the RealClearPolitics average. Failing to adequately support the workers could also jeopardize crucial blue-collar union support in the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Biden has demonstrated his commitment to unions through policy actions, such as incentivizing or requiring companies to use unionized workers in infrastructure and climate legislation. He has also highlighted the passage of the Butch Lewis Act, which provides financial assistance to failing pension plans.
However, previous disputes have shown that reconciling differences may not be easy. Even when Biden signed a bill to avert a rail strike, some union members felt insulted by the terms, emphasizing the challenges of maintaining a positive relationship between the president and unions.
As the countdown to the contract expiration continues, all eyes are on President Biden and his ability to navigate this critical situation while upholding his pro-union stance.
