Biden Heckled by Parkland Dad During Gun Violence Event
A gun control advocate interrupted President Joe Biden‘s Monday remarks commemorating the passage of the bipartisan Safer Communites Act.
Manuel Oliver, the father of Parkland victim Joaquin Oliver, stood up during the South Lawn ceremony and loudly objected to Biden’s claim that the bipartisan gun violence bill “matched thoughts and prayers with action.”
Oliver additionally voiced his displeasure ahead of the White House’s event.

“The word CELEBRATION has no space in a society that saw 19 kids massacred just a month ago,” he tweeted. “’Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.’ Not me, not Joaquin.”

Oliver was quickly escorted out of the event, but not before the president told him to “sit down” and “hear what I have to say.”
He continued to object to Biden’s remarks while being removed, prompting the president to direct staff to “let him talk.” Biden proceeded to outline how the legislation included funding for red flag laws, closing the boyfriend loophole, and outlawing straw purchases.
Oliver reportedly plans to hold a press conference with other gun violence advocates at 2 p.m. near the White House. Biden signed the Safer Communities Act into law in late June before traveling to Europe for NATO and G-7 meetings. The law marks the first bipartisan action on gun violence in decades but falls far short of what Biden and activists proposed.
Still, Biden reiterated his determination to ban assault-style weapons “once again” and called for the additional passage of safe storage laws and expanded federal background checks.
