Comer asserts Biden impeachment inquiry will proceed, Hunter’s involvement notwithstanding
Impeachment Inquiry Continues Despite Hunter Biden’s Absence
In an unexpected turn of events, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has made it clear that the anticipated impeachment inquiry hearing will go on, even after Hunter Biden declined to attend as a witness.
Despite Hunter Biden’s resistance, Comer has penned a letter—made public last Friday—urging Biden to rethink his decision. The move comes after Biden backed out from his earlier offer to testify in an open forum.
Public versus Private Testimony: Swirling Controversy
Biden’s initial stance was to only provide testimony if it were in a public setting, responding to mounting pressure from House lawmakers for a private deposition. However, he eventually complied and attended a closed-door session last month.
Comer criticized Biden’s decision, stating, “the only conclusion that one can reach is that Mr. Biden knows his public testimony would not withstand scrutiny.”
Invitations to Associates and the Path Forward
Chairman Comer has also extended invitations to three of Biden’s former business associates: Jason Galanis, Devon Archer, and Tony Bobulinski, requesting their presence as witnesses at the upcoming hearing scheduled for March 20. Their attendance, however, remains uncertain.
Addressing Hunter Biden, Comer declared the hearing will advance “with or without” him. He emphasized the necessity of publicly exposing how the ”Biden brand” was commercialized across various countries, including Ukraine and China, and the potential involvement of President Joe Biden in these transactions.
The Political Landscape and Future Prospects
The determination to conduct the hearing arrives at a time when the likelihood of impeaching President Joe Biden grows dim for House Republicans. With their majority reduced to a slender two-vote margin, and only a subset of the group showing eagerness toward impeachment proceedings, Comer maintains that the purpose of the inquiry is investigatory, examining Joe Biden’s role in his son’s business activities, which may lead to legislative changes or even criminal referrals, rather than impeachment as the sole outcome.

Response from Hunter Biden’s Legal Team
Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, has labeled Comer’s insistence on the upcoming hearing as a desperate “Hail Mary.”
“Your blatant planned-for-media event is not a proper proceeding but an obvious attempt to throw a Hail Mary pass after the game has ended,” Lowell remarked.
Despite contrasting viewpoints and soaring tensions, the committee is steadfast in moving forward with the hearing, signaling a critical moment in this political saga.
