Biden Lauds His SCOTUS Nominee’s Performance in Congressional Hearings
President Joe Biden commended Supreme Court pick Ketanji Brown Jackson for her handling of “conspiracy theories” as the Senate Judiciary Committee vets her qualifications to become the first black woman to sit on the bench.
Biden was particularly “struck by how she swiftly dismantled conspiracy theories put forward in bad faith,” according to deputy White House press secretary Chris Meagher.
“They’ve been debunked by numerous fact checks, experts, and the record itself,” he told reporters Tuesday.
“In selecting Judge Jackson, President Biden sought the opinions of Republicans and Democrats, who made clear they wanted someone of deep experience in the mold of Justice Breyer,” he added. “Today’s testimony and Judge Jackson’s endorsements by leading conservative jurists and some of the biggest law enforcement organizations in our country make clear she is indeed in Justice Breyer’s mold.”

Biden, who watched part of Jackson’s confirmation hearings on Monday and Tuesday, emphasized her “dedication to following the facts of the law and our Constitution as an independent judge,” according to Meagher.
“Judge Jackson spoke about her family members who have served as police officers, saying, ‘I know what it’s like to have loved ones who go off to protect and to serve and the fear of not knowing whether or not they’re going to come home again because of crime in the community,'” Meagher said.
Jackson started responding to Senate Judiciary Committee member questions on Tuesday, with each lawmaker assigned 30 minutes. South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham peppered Jackson with more than 60 queries during his allotted time, including regarding her defense of Guantanamo Bay detainees and the support that resulted in Biden choosing her over Graham’s preferred nominee, South Carolina-based U.S. District Court Judge J. Michelle Childs.
“You wouldn’t say you are an activist judge?” Graham asked Jackson.
“I would not say that,” Jackson replied.
“Every group that wants to pack the court, that believes this court is a bunch of right-wing nuts that are going to destroy America, that consider the Constitution trash all wanted you picked,” Graham said.
Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley previewed his line of inquiry concerning Jackson’s child sex offender sentencing record on Monday.

“Some have said that the federal sentencing guidelines are too harsh on child sex crimes, especially child pornography. I’ve heard that argument a lot in recent days,” the potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate said. “I’ll just be honest. I can’t say that I agree with that.”
