Biden Nominee Clears Senate Hurdle Despite Sex Harassment Scandal

Eric Garcetti was named by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, a Democratic-led committee. Ambassador to India — with the support of two Senate Republicans — amid allegations his office covered up sexual assault and harassment.

Garcetti welcomed President Joe Biden’s nomination in 2021. He has been accused turning a blindeye to a Los Angeles officer who was sexually harassed and harassed by an ex-top aide. He denied all allegations and said he didn’t witness any inappropriate conduct.

Due to his past actions, the issue created a two-year gap in New Delhi that is unprecedented. This has made it difficult for Republicans and Democrats alike to support Garcetti.

Although Garcetti was accused, the committee members voted 13-8 in favor of Republican senators. Todd Young, Indiana, and Bill Hagerty from Tennessee were supporting. The Democrat party includes two women senators. Mazie Hirono from Hawaii, and Tammy Duckworth in Illinois, were reportedly the ones who told Politico They plan to support Garcetti’s candidacy.

Minority ranking member Sen. James Risch (R-ID) told Punchbowl News On Capitol Hill, he said that he would vote against Garcetti’s nomination. “new evidence [that] has raised enough questions regarding his judgment.”

“We must ensure that any chief of mission will, without question, protect our foreign service officers and embassy staff from all types of harassment,” Risch said.

Risch was reportedly the one who supported Garcetti previously in committee.

Garcetti cleared this hurdle almost 600 days after his nod from Biden’s administration. Soon after, Senator Marco Rubio (R/FL) placed an hold on Garcetti’s nomination, which complicated his path to the floor vote by full Senate.

Rubio also included Garcetti’s nod on a list “questionable individuals” nominated in the Biden administration’s press release “one of these nominees has ignored credible sexual assault accusations in his prior office.”

Congress supported the nomination for the former mayor last year during the previous Congress, just before facing the sexual assault allegations. The accusations surfaced in Los Angeles when it was experiencing severe lockdowns and Los Angeles residents were forced to leave the city.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R.IA) asked for an investigation into Garcetti in the last year which delayed Garcetti’s confirmation as senator.

CBS reports that CBS found the report to be inaccurate. “more probable than not” Garcetti realized that Rick Jacobs, his former aide, was in fact Garcetti “sexually harassed multiple individuals and made racist comments towards others.”

“Mr. Jacobs’ behavior was widely known and talked about,” The report is as follows. “It was pervasive, widespread and notorious — to the point that Mr. Jacobs sexually harassed someone in front of the mayor for a picture that would be memorialized for all of time. Such overt conduct suggests at best that Mr. Jacobs had no fear of any repercussions.”

Naomi Seligman was Garcetti’s ex-communications director. She also whistleblower. Naomi testified at L.A. City Hall to sexual abuse and she told The Daily Wire via email that Garcetti’s promotion is unacceptable. “disheartening, to say the least.”

“Today’s vote, on International Women’s Day no less, shows a real disconnect between the rhetoric we hear from elected leaders who claim to support victims of workplace sexual harassment and the pass they give to party loyalists in the next breath,” Seligman stated.

“It was already clear from the time of his nomination that Garcetti was unfit to represent our country, and each passing month reveals new embarrassments to the President and the Senate – from prior perjury before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, strong arming senators to support his nomination, more witnesses and victims of sexual harassment, and multiple members of the Garcetti administration facing corruption charges and serving prison sentences,” Elle added.

Garcetti is now ready to vote in the U.S. Senate.

Whistleblower Aid is a non-profit organization that supports individuals who report corporate and government law-breaking. It was previously known as the committee’s support to Garcetti “a bitter pill to swallow” Despite the accusations of sexual assault against him.

The Daily Wire was emailed by the group urging the Senate to include all members. “reject Garcetti and confirm a nominee with a clear record on protecting victims of sexual harassment and abuse.”
