The Democratic Party’s Super-Rich Mega-Donors: Out of Touch and Delusional
The super-rich mega-donors of the Democratic Party seem to live in a different reality. If they were in touch with the real world, they wouldn’t be Democrats.
However, there is one area where these mega-donors have a better grasp of the truth than President Joe Biden’s campaign officials.
According to the Washington Post, Democrat mega-donors recently expressed disbelief when campaign officials claimed that Florida’s 30 electoral votes could help re-elect Biden in 2024.
During a private campaign event in Chicago, Biden’s deputy campaign manager Quentin Fulks presented an optimistic analysis of the 2024 electoral map to over 100 wealthy Democrats.
Fulks suggested that Biden could secure the presidency by winning Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, which the donors agreed with.
He then mentioned the campaign’s focus on other battleground states like Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada, which also received the donors’ approval.
However, when Fulks speculated about other paths to victory that included Florida, he faced skepticism from the audience.
“Everybody who was in the audience was doing deep eye-rolls over Florida being on the expansion map,” one attendee said.
The idea that Democrats could compete in Florida, a state that has consistently leaned towards the Republican Party in recent elections, seemed delusional to these mega-donors.
In the 2016 election, former President Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by 1.2 percentage points in Florida. In 2020, Trump increased his margin of victory, winning the state by 3.3 percentage points against Biden.
Furthermore, in the 2022 gubernatorial race, popular Republican Governor Ron DeSantis won re-election by a significant margin of 19.4 percentage points, erasing the notion of Florida as a swing state.
These mega-donors are well aware of these facts and have maintained their wealth by not wasting their money on losing propositions.
When they look ahead to the 2024 election, they see speculations about winning Florida as nonsensical and potentially damaging to the credibility of those making such claims.
These donors understand that the Democratic Party has numerous challenges elsewhere and cannot afford to waste time dreaming about Florida.
Recent polls also indicate that Biden faces an uphill battle. An ABC News/Washington Post poll showed Trump with a 51-42 lead over Biden. The Real Clear Politics average of polls for September 7-20 also gives Trump a 1.6-point lead nationally.
Additionally, Florida’s practice of counting votes on election day poses another challenge for Democrats.

However, it is also possible that these mega-donors are simply hedging their bets. By spreading their donations across different political parties, they can ensure some level of influence regardless of who is in power.
Regardless of their motivations, it is clear that these mega-donors do not see Florida as a viable path to victory for the Democratic Party in 2024. They understand the realities of the political landscape and are not delusional in their expectations.
The Democratic Party needs to listen to these mega-donors and take their concerns seriously. Ignoring the realities of the political landscape can be detrimental to the party’s chances of success in future elections.
If the Democratic Party wants to be truly representative of the American people, they need to reconnect with the priorities and concerns of voters, rather than relying on the ideological and financial support of out-of-touch mega-donors.
It is time for the Democratic Party to reassess its relationship with its super-rich mega-donors and focus on building a broad-based coalition that is in touch with the realities of the political landscape and the needs of the American people. Only then can the party hope to win back the trust of voters and secure a lasting majority.
