Biden mentions lightning strike, kitchen fire at home, and compares it to Maui devastation.
President Biden’s Controversial Comparison: Lightning Strike vs. Maui Wildfires
President Joe Biden is once again facing criticism for a story he shared during his visit to wildfire-ravaged Maui. Last week, the president and the first lady visited the devastated island, where Biden attempted to relate to the victims by sharing a personal anecdote.
Speaking to Hawaiians who had lost everything in the fires, Biden compared their ordeal to a lightning strike that once hit his home, causing a small kitchen fire and nearly destroying his prized ’67 Corvette.
Biden says “Jill and I have a little sense of what it’s like to lose a home” and then tells the story of when lightning struck his house in 2004 and says “I almost lost my ’67 corvette and my cat.”

This comparison drew backlash as the fire in Biden’s home was contained to the kitchen, quickly resolved, and in no way comparable to the devastation in Maui.
However, despite the criticism, Biden brought up the story again during a press conference addressing the Hawaiian wildfires and Hurricane Idalia, which was battering Florida. This time, he added that his family had to evacuate their home for seven months and claimed that “half the house almost collapsed.”

Once again, Biden faced backlash for this exaggerated tale, with many criticizing his self-centeredness and narcissism in comparing a minor kitchen fire to the loss of everything in a wildfire.
He lost a kitchen, they lost lives and some lost everything they owned. No comparison..

It is clear that the people of Hawaii do not appreciate this comparison. Biden claimed the incident happened “15 years ago,” which would place it in 2008 when he was already a long-serving senator and on the verge of becoming vice president.
Being temporarily displaced from their home for a few months is a small sacrifice for the Biden family, who likely had other comfortable accommodations. Furthermore, they did not lose their house; the damage was quickly repaired, and life resumed as usual.
In contrast, the people of Maui lost everything in the fire—homes, businesses, and even lives. Comparing a kitchen fire to this level of devastation is insensitive and tone-deaf.
It appears that Biden is more concerned with garnering sympathy for himself over an incident that occurred years ago than with providing real help to the wildfire victims who are desperately trying to rebuild their lives.
