Biden renews gun control plea during Thousand Oaks shooting memorial.
President Biden Renews Call for Gun Control Legislation on Anniversary of Thousand Oaks Shooting
President Joe Biden reiterated his plea for stricter gun control laws on Tuesday as he commemorated the five-year anniversary of the tragic mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, California, where 12 lives were lost. This statement from Biden follows his recent visit to Lewiston, Maine, where two mass shootings occurred in late October, resulting in the deaths of nearly 20 individuals.
“No family or community should ever have to go through what the Thousand Oaks community did that night. Yet, in the years since — from Lewiston to Highland Park, Buffalo to Uvalde, Monterey Park to El Paso, and thousands of communities impacted by daily acts of gun violence that do not make national headlines — our country has been devastated by an epidemic of gun violence again and again,”
the president wrote.
Biden expressed his solidarity with the victims and survivors of the Thousand Oaks attack, as well as those who continue to mourn the loss of their loved ones. He urged the nation to transform their heartbreak into action and put an end to the ongoing gun violence crisis.
In his statement, Biden emphasized his commitment to combatting gun violence, citing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the establishment of the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention, and numerous executive actions implemented during his administration.
“I’ve also continued to call on Republicans in Congress to help pass commonsense gun safety policies — like banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and much more — that we know can save lives,”
Biden stated.
However, due to the current Republican majority in the House, the prospects of passing additional gun control legislation appear slim. Nevertheless, the Lewiston shooting did sway at least one vote regarding Biden’s proposed assault weapons ban. Representative Jared Golden, a Democrat from Maine, previously opposed the ban but has now changed his stance.
“I have opposed efforts to ban deadly weapons of war. The time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why I now call on the United States Congress to ban assault rifles,”
Golden declared at a press conference in Lewiston.
Despite the challenges ahead, President Biden remains determined to address the issue of gun violence and urges bipartisan cooperation to enact meaningful change.
How has the rise in gun violence in the United States prompted President Biden to prioritize comprehensive gun control measures?
As Vegas to El Paso, from Parkland to Pittsburgh, from Odessa to Charleston, from Atlanta to Boulder — too many communities have experienced the devastating effects of gun violence,” President Biden said in a solemn address at the White House. “It is long past time for us to act. We must do everything in our power to protect our communities and prevent future tragedies.”
The incident in Thousand Oaks, known as the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting, took place on November 7, 2018. A lone gunman opened fire inside the crowded bar during a college night event, killing 12 people and injuring several others before turning the gun on himself. The tragedy shook the nation, once again highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive gun control measures.
President Biden, a vocal advocate for gun control, expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, emphasizing the importance of taking action to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He called on Congress to pass legislation aimed at closing loopholes in the background check system, banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and implementing red flag laws that allow temporary firearm removal from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others.
Biden’s renewed push for gun control comes at a time when the nation is grappling with a rise in gun violence. According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 442 mass shootings in the United States this year alone, with over 17,000 deaths and 32,000 injuries due to gun violence. These disturbing statistics have fueled calls for stricter gun control measures and prompted President Biden to make it a priority of his administration.
However, passing comprehensive gun control legislation remains a challenge. The issue of gun control is highly polarizing in the United States, with strong opposition from certain groups who argue that such measures infringe upon their Second Amendment rights. The influence of gun rights organizations, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), also poses obstacles to significant legislative changes.
Despite the challenges, President Biden remains optimistic that progress can be made. He has called on Americans to unite and put aside their political differences to address this critical issue. “This is not a partisan issue; it is an American issue,” Biden stated. “We must come together as a nation and take meaningful action to prevent further loss of innocent lives.”
In addition to his plea to Congress, President Biden has taken executive actions to address gun violence. These actions include directing the Department of Justice to issue regulations to curb the proliferation of ghost guns and proposing a rule to ensure that stabilizing braces, which effectively turn pistols into rifles, are subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act.
President Biden’s call for gun control legislation has garnered support from gun control advocacy groups and some Democratic lawmakers. However, achieving meaningful reform will require bipartisan cooperation and a willingness to find common ground. It is unclear whether Congress will be able to pass significant gun control measures in the face of deeply entrenched divisions on the issue.
While the road ahead may be challenging, President Biden’s plea for gun control serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing the issue of gun violence in America. The anniversary of the Thousand Oaks shooting serves as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on communities. It is a call to action, urging policymakers and citizens alike to work towards creating a safer and more secure nation.
President Biden concluded his address by reaffirming his commitment to tackling the issue of gun violence head-on, stating, “We cannot and will not accept this as normal. We will work tirelessly to prevent future tragedies and create a future where no one has to live in fear of gun violence.”
