Biden suggests China’s economic decline may reduce chances of Taiwan invasion.
President Biden: Chinese Economic Decline May Benefit Taiwan
“You recently called China’s economy a ‘ticking time bomb,'” a reporter said. “Do you believe the country’s slowdown in growth could risk destabilizing the global economy or cause China to be more aggressive defensively, including with Taiwan?”
President Joe Biden responded by acknowledging China’s economic challenges but dismissed the notion that it would lead to aggression towards Taiwan. He highlighted the difficulties China is facing due to international growth concerns and their policy choices. According to Biden, China’s economic struggles may actually diminish its capacity to invade Taiwan.
However, Biden made it clear that his intention is not to harm China. He expressed his belief that a prosperous China benefits everyone.
China’s economy has experienced minimal growth this year, with deflation becoming a concerning issue. Speculation has arisen that President Xi Jinping might consider invading Taiwan if he perceives China’s future weakness. Nevertheless, President Biden, an eternal optimist, believes that a sluggish economy could deter China from pursuing such ambitions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining economic engagement with China.
“We’re not looking to decouple from China,” Biden stated. “What I’m not going to do is sell China materials that could enhance their nuclear weapons capabilities or defense activities.”
