Biden plans to visit Hawaii with the first lady at the earliest opportunity.
President Biden to Travel to Hawaii to Survey Wildfire Cleanup and Rescue Effort
President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday his plans to travel to Hawaii to personally assess the ongoing cleanup and rescue efforts in response to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged multiple islands. The fires have tragically claimed the lives of 99 people so far, with the potential for the casualty count to rise even further in the coming days.
Prioritizing Support and Assistance
In his remarks delivered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, President Biden expressed his deep sorrow for the lives lost and their grieving families. He emphasized his commitment to providing the necessary support and assistance to Hawaii during this challenging time.
“My wife Jill and I are going to travel to Hawaii as soon as we can,” the president stated. “That’s what I’ve been talking to Governor Green about. I don’t want to get in the way.
“I’ve been to too many disaster areas, but I want to go make sure we’ve got everything they need,” he continued. “I want to be sure we don’t disrupt the ongoing recovery efforts.”
President Biden also pledged to provide federal aid to Hawaii for as long as it takes to complete the cleanup effort, underscoring his administration’s commitment to supporting the state in its recovery.
A Timely Response
While the president faced questions about the timing of his public address regarding the wildfires, White House principal deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton defended Biden’s response, highlighting that he had addressed the issue in public remarks last Thursday in Salt Lake City and had been actively coordinating a comprehensive government response from the beginning.
President Biden’s visit to Hawaii will not only demonstrate his personal commitment to the affected communities but also ensure that the necessary resources are provided to aid in the recovery process.
