Biden promises ‘work, opportunity, and hope’ for the Midwest
President Biden Announces Billions in Infrastructure Investments, Including $1 Billion for Bridge Repair
President Joe Biden made a trip to Wisconsin on Thursday to unveil a series of new infrastructure investments, with $1 billion allocated to repair the John A. Blatnik Memorial Bridge that connects Wisconsin to Minnesota.
During his visit to the Earth Rider Brewery in Superior, Biden took the opportunity to promote his economic policies, which he referred to as “Bidenomics,” in a swing state crucial to his 2024 reelection campaign. He highlighted the recent strong GDP report, revealing a 2.5% growth in the economy in 2023, surpassing expectations. In addition, he criticized former President Donald Trump, the likely 2024 Republican presidential nominee, for joking about a potential economic crash before the election.
“The economic growth is stronger than we had during the Trump administration. My predecessor recently said he was actually hoping for the economy to crash, his quote, hoping for the economy to crash,” Biden told the crowd. “He hopes it happens soon, while I’m still president. That’s what he’s hoping for. Well, thanks to the American people, America now has the strongest growth, lowest inflation rate of any major economy in the world.”
The $5 billion in new investments will be distributed among 11 different projects and were made possible through Biden’s infrastructure law. So far, the White House has directed over $400 billion in funding from Biden’s legislative packages to infrastructure projects across the country. In Wisconsin, Biden emphasized that these funds will bring “work, opportunity, and hope” to communities nationwide.
Just a day before, Biden received a significant endorsement for his 2024 campaign from the United Auto Workers. During his speech in Wisconsin, he stated that the Blatnik project alone would create 10,000 new union jobs in Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Unlike his previous engagements this week, Biden’s speech was not interrupted by pro-Gaza activists. However, reporters accompanying the president noted the presence of pro-Palestinian protesters near the brewery entrance before his remarks.
In his concluding remarks, President Biden expressed his optimism for the future of the country and urged unity among Americans:
“When you see the shovels in the ground and cranes in the sky and people hard at work in these projects, I hope you feel a renewed sense of pride. I’ve never been more optimistic about the future of this country. Just remember who in God’s name we are. We’re the United States of America, and there’s nothing, nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together. Let’s start working together, for God’s sake.”

How does the investment in clean energy infrastructure, such as electric vehicle charging stations, contribute to the overall goals of President Biden’s infrastructure plan
Ry.
The repair of the John A. Blatnik Memorial Bridge, which spans the St. Louis River and connects Superior, Wisconsin, to Duluth, Minnesota, has been long overdue. The bridge, built in 1961, has deteriorated over the years and is in desperate need of repair. The allocated $1 billion will go towards addressing the structural issues and ensuring the safety and longevity of the bridge.
President Biden emphasized the importance of investing in infrastructure, stating that it not only creates jobs and stimulates economic growth but also improves the overall quality of life for Americans. He cited examples of crumbling roads, bridges, and airports across the country, highlighting the need to modernize and repair these vital components of our transportation system.
The investments in infrastructure will not only address immediate needs but also lay the foundation for a sustainable and resilient future. Biden’s plan includes provisions for clean energy infrastructure, such as electric vehicle charging stations and renewable energy projects. These investments align with his administration’s commitment to tackling climate change and transitioning to a greener economy.
In addition to the infrastructure investments, President Biden also addressed criticisms and comparisons with his predecessor. He pointed out the significant economic growth achieved under his administration and took a moment to criticize former President Trump. Biden highlighted Trump’s comments about hoping for an economic crash, contrasting them with the current strong economic indicators.
The announcement of these new infrastructure investments in a swing state like Wisconsin is significant. Biden is keenly aware of the political implications and the impact it could have on his potential reelection campaign in 2024. By highlighting the positive economic outcomes and the benefits of his policies, he aims to secure support from voters and showcase his commitment to delivering on his promises.
The $5 billion directed towards infrastructure projects is a step in the right direction, but there is still much work to be done. The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that the United States needs to spend $2.6 trillion by 2029 to adequately address the infrastructure deficit. President Biden’s infrastructure law is a crucial first step, but sustained investment and prioritization of infrastructure is necessary to ensure a safe and efficient transportation system for all Americans.
As President Biden continues to push for infrastructure investments and promote his economic policies, the repair of the John A. Blatnik Memorial Bridge serves as a symbol of progress and a tangible example of the positive impact of infrastructure funding. It is an investment not only in physical infrastructure but also in the future success and prosperity of the United States.
