President Joe Biden expressed his disappointment on Sunday regarding Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s decision to skip the G20 summit in India. Reports suggest that Premier Li Qiang will likely attend the summit on behalf of Mr. Xi. Despite his disappointment, President Biden remains optimistic, stating, “I am disappointed, but I am going to get to see him.”

On Monday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry officially confirmed that Premier Li would be attending the two-day summit instead of Mr. Xi. President Biden is scheduled to travel to India from Sept. 7 to Sept. 10 for the G20 summit in New Delhi, where leaders of major economies will gather to discuss global issues.
Although President Biden did not specify when his next meeting with China’s leader might be, he expressed his anticipation during a trilateral summit between the United States, Japan, and South Korea. He stated, ”I expect and hope to follow up on our conversation in Bali this fall.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently criticized China’s “debt trap” during an interview. He highlighted the importance of guarding against financial indiscipline and expressed concerns about forces taking advantage of other countries’ debt crises. Mr. Modi emphasized that the G20 countries have begun addressing the debt crisis of low- and middle-income countries.
China has faced criticism for its lending practices, particularly through its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The initiative has been viewed as a means for the Chinese Communist Party to gain control of strategic assets in emerging countries. The Chinese regime has provided loans totaling approximately 0 billion to 22 developing countries from 2008 to 2021. However, some countries have struggled to repay these loans, leading to concerns about debt distress.
Relations between India and China have been strained since the 2020 border confrontation that resulted in casualties on both sides. The conflict has led to a military buildup along the disputed border, making it challenging to restore normalcy in the relationship.
