Biden says ‘we’re close’ to Middle East ceasefire – Washington Examiner
President Joe Biden indicated on Friday that efforts are advancing towards a ceasefire deal in the Middle East. This statement suggests that negotiations may be nearing fruition, highlighting the ongoing diplomatic efforts to address the conflict in the region. Details about the potential ceasefire and its implications have yet to be fully outlined, but Biden’s comments signal a positive shift in discussions aimed at reducing hostilities.
Biden says ‘we’re close’ to ceasefire deal in Middle East
President Joe Biden hinted Friday that a ceasefire deal in the Middle East could happen sooner rather than later.
“We’re much, much closer than we were three days ago,” Biden told reporters in the Oval Office. “I don’t want to jinx anything,” he added.
Biden said the deal is not done yet, but “we’re close.”
War has raged in Gaza since terrorist attacks last Oct. 7 led to the deaths of more than 1,200 people in Israel. Protesters calling for an end to hostilities have trailed Biden nearly everywhere he goes in the months since, and protests are expected at next week’s Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
Biden has, in the past, announced and endorsed ceasefire terms, including on May 31. But that effort and those since have not yet materialized.
Ceasefire talks have been taking place all week, and the United States, Egypt, and Qatar released a joint statement Friday morning indicating progress toward a ceasefire and the release of hostages and detainees.
“The path is now set for that outcome, saving lives, bringing relief to the people of Gaza, and de-escalating regional tensions,” the statement read.
