Biden adopts friendlier tone at congressional picnic post Hunter Biden hearing: ‘We’re pals’
President Biden Calls for Unity at Congressional Picnic
President Joe Biden hosted a bipartisan congressional picnic at the White House, urging lawmakers to put aside their differences and ”be friends” with one another. This event came just hours after a heated Capitol Hill hearing focused on the financial dealings of the president’s son, Hunter Biden.
In his opening remarks, President Biden lightened the mood with a joke he had used at last year’s picnic. As the crowd laughed, Vice President Kamala Harris and First Lady Jill Biden stood by his side.
The president expressed his gratitude to the members of Congress in attendance and emphasized the importance of family. He acknowledged the pressure that families of lawmakers face and thanked them for their support.
Interestingly, on the same day, two IRS whistleblowers revealed new details about the Bidens’ finances, alleging that the family had received $17 million in foreign money.
President Biden took a moment to acknowledge former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, playfully referring to her as ”Speaker Emeritus” and expressing his appreciation for her. However, he initially looked in the wrong direction, prompting the first lady to guide him to the correct spot in the crowd.
The president also expressed his fondness for current Speaker Kevin McCarthy, highlighting their ability to work together despite their political differences.
In his closing remarks, President Biden emphasized the importance of unity and friendship, urging lawmakers to treat each other with kindness and respect. He expressed optimism that progress could be made despite disagreements.
White House Press Secretary Confirms Bipartisan Invitation
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that lawmakers from both parties were invited to the congressional picnic. She emphasized that all members of Congress were welcome, without any selection or exclusion.
“I believe so. I think that’s usually the way it works, that all members of Congress are indeed invited,” Jean-Pierre told reporters. “We are not picking who gets to come and who doesn’t get to come.”
