Biden State Department Bans Times New Roman Font

On Tuesday, Antony Blinken, Secretary of State, issued an order prohibiting the use of Times New Roman fonts in communications between State Departments.

Times New Roman was first created in 1932. Why is it suddenly so difficult? If you guessed it was because the Biden administration determined the font was racist, I wouldn’t blame you for thinking so. Recent developments made it seem inevitable that someone would declare all serif fonts to be tools of white supremacy.

Believe it or not, once in a while, the decision was made with something completely different.

Out of a desire for more, the State Department has decided to abandon Times New Roman. “inclusive” To “employees who are visually impaired or have other difficulties reading,” according To the Washington Post. The paper was given a copy from the department-wide memo. “The Times (New Roman) are a-Changin.”

The State Department’s domestic and overseas offices have until Feb. 6 to transition from Times New Roman to the sans serif font, Calibri — which is now the new standard font for the department’s communications.

“Blinken’s cable said the shift to Calibri will make it easier for people with disabilities who use certain assistive technologies, such as screen readers, to read department communication,” The explanation Washington Post. “The change was recommended by the secretary’s office of diversity and inclusion, but the decision has already ruffled feathers among aesthetic-conscious employees who have been typing in Times New Roman for years in cables and memos from far-flung embassies and consulates around the world.”

Yeah, it turns out that despite the seemingly good intentions of the switch, there isn’t a ton of love for it — especially because no one really loves Calibri.

“A colleague of mine called it sacrilege,” An officer from the Foreign Service in Asia informed the Post. “I don’t mind the decision because I hate serifs, but I don’t love Calibri.”

“I’m anticipating an internal revolt,” A second Foreign Service officer spoke to the paper.

If only State Department personnel were this outraged by Biden’s efforts to restore the nuclear deal with Iran — or his botched withdrawal from Afghanistan.
