Biden’s State Department misgenders staff and adds pronouns to emails.
State Department Email System Assigns Random and Incorrect Gender Pronouns to Employees
The State Department recently experienced a “pronoun glitch” in their email system, which assigned random and often incorrect gender pronouns to employees. Men were given female pronouns and vice versa, causing confusion and frustration among staff.
The issue arose just one day after the department celebrated “Interphobia Awareness Day,” highlighting their commitment to promoting gender inclusivity. However, this unintentional error detracted from their efforts and left many employees feeling triggered and distracted from their work.
State Department Responds to Pronoun Glitch
When reached for comment, the State Department referred to a tweet from spokesman Matthew Miller, acknowledging the issue and assuring employees that the Bureau of Information Resource Management (IRM) was working to remedy the situation immediately.
“The State Department’s Bureau of Information Resource Management (IRM) is aware of the recent issues with user profiles on Microsoft Outlook and working to remedy the situation. This change was unintentional and the bureau is working to correct this immediately.” – Matthew Miller (@StateDeptSpox)
Despite the apology and efforts to fix the issue, employees remained frustrated and confused by the sudden change. Associated Press reporter Matthew Lee even brought up the issue during the department’s daily briefing, calling the situation “ridiculous.”
Lessons Learned
- Double-check email systems for any potential glitches or errors before implementing changes.
- Ensure that all employees are properly trained on any new systems or initiatives to avoid confusion and frustration.
- Respond quickly and transparently to any issues or concerns raised by employees to maintain trust and morale.
By taking these steps, organizations can avoid similar issues and maintain a positive and inclusive work environment for all employees.
