Biden: ‘Stupid’ not to have signed COVID-19 checks like Trump
President Joe Biden reflected Tuesday that it was “stupid” not to have signed COVID-19 stimulus checks during his administration, something he pointed out President-elect Donald Trump did.
Biden was speaking to the Brookings Institution while touting the COVID-19 stimulus bill passed in 2021, according to a report. The bill, costing $19 trillion, led to $1,400 checks being sent to the general public.
“I also learned something from Donald Trump — he signed checks for people … and I didn’t,” Biden said. “Stupid.”
Biden has long criticized Trump for signing stimulus checks during his administration, touting the fact that Biden pledged not to do the same. Trump’s White House sent $1,200 checks to the populace in 2020, all of which featured Trump’s signature.
While he may not have signed the $1,400 checks sent out in 2021, Biden did send letters to recipients taking credit for the stimulus bill shortly after sending the checks. Biden did the same with student debt cancellations earlier this year, sending a letter taking credit for canceling the student debt of 153,000 borrowers.
The letters prominently featured the president’s signature.
Biden stepped down from his reelection campaign earlier this year after polls showed he was likely to lose the election. His successor, Vice President Kamala Harris, eventually lost the election to Trump, and Trump is scheduled to be sworn into office early next year.
