Biden dismisses Trump’s Iowa victory as insignificant
President Biden Downplays Trump’s Iowa Caucus Win
President Joe Biden made an effort to downplay the significance of former President Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa caucus on Monday. Despite Trump winning 51% of the votes, surpassing his challengers by a wide margin, Biden dismissed the results as inconsequential.
During a press conference before his departure to North Carolina, Biden responded to a question about the impact of the Iowa results on his own reelection prospects. He emphasized, “I don’t think Iowa means anything. The president got 50-some-thousand votes, the lowest number of votes anybody who’s won got. This idea that he’s going to run away, he can think anyway he wants. Let him make that judgment.”
While Trump’s campaign tried to portray the results as a landslide victory, Biden correctly pointed out the relatively low number of total votes the former president received. The state of Iowa was hit by severe winter storms, resulting in heavy snowfall and significantly reducing voter turnout at the caucuses.
Only around 110,000 Republicans voted on Monday, a significant decline compared to the 187,000 who participated in the 2016 GOP caucuses. In that election, Senator Ted Cruz emerged as the winner with a more than 3-point lead over his competitors.
The total number of votes cast in the 2024 Iowa caucuses marked the lowest Republican turnout in a nominating contest since 2000.
