Biden and Zelenskyy to Meet at Hiroshima Summit: White House

President Biden to Meet with Ukrainian President at Hiroshima Summit

The White House has announced that President Joe Biden will hold a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the Hiroshima Summit on May 21 at 1:15 a.m. (2:15 p.m. local time). The meeting will reaffirm the United States’ support for Ukraine going forward.

G7 Leaders Vow to Intensify Pressure on Russia

Leaders from G7 countries, including the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, and Italy, are currently attending the summit in Hiroshima. The group has vowed to intensify pressure on Russia, stating that “Russia’s brutal war of aggression represents a threat to the whole world in breach of fundamental norms, rules and principles of the international community.”

  • Italy’s Primer Minister Giorgia Meloni
  • Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
  • France’s President Emmanuel Macron
  • Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida
  • US President Joe Biden
  • German Chancellor Olaf Scholz
  • Britain’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak
  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen

Politico has reported that the Biden administration will announce a new military aid package of $375 million for Ukraine after the Biden-Zelenskyy meeting. However, a senior White House official did not confirm or deny the report, stating that “PDA packages will continue to flow to Ukraine.”

Green Light on Joint F-16 Training

During the summit, President Biden told his G7 counterparts that the United States will support a joint effort to train Ukrainian pilots on fourth-generation fighter aircraft. As part of the decision, the United States will permit its Western allies to supply Ukraine with fighter jets, including U.S.-made F-16s.

This is a significant shift by the Biden administration, as it had previously ruled out providing Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets. The green light on F-16 training is part of the United States’ long-term commitment to Ukraine’s self-defense.

F-16 fighter jets take part in the NATO Air Shielding exercise near the air base in Lask, Poland, on Oct. 12, 2022.

With these developments, it is clear that the United States is committed to supporting Ukraine in its efforts to defend itself against Russian aggression.
