Biden tries to contain classified documents leak fallout: ‘Stakes just got higher’

Recently, an Air National Guardsman from Massachusetts, Jack Teixeira, was arrested on suspicion of leaking classified information that has already caused significant harm to the Ukraine war and the United States’ relationships with critical allies such as Egypt, Israel, and South Korea. The leak has raised concerns about national security, and there are worries about the political fallout for President Joe Biden.

Mick Mulroy, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for the Middle East, condemned Teixeira’s alleged leak, stating that it threatens national security by undermining the country’s ability to collect intelligence. The leak, which reportedly started in an online chatroom, has caused “substantive damage” to Ukraine and jeopardized America’s relationships with its allies. The leak was discovered months after Biden faced his own classified information scandal.

The leak has become a significant concern for Biden at a critical time in the Ukraine war, where he seeks to restore the country’s reputation with other international leaders after the contentious relationships of the previous administration with some of those leaders. As Michael O’Hanlon, Brookings Institution’s foreign policy research director, said, it is too soon to be sure how big the impact of this leak will be.

According to Mulroy, there needs to be a review of how classified info is stored and accessed by personnel. While there are electronic devices that are more secure, printed copies of classified information are challenging to track and can cause significant damage if leaked. James Carafano, Vice President of Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at the Heritage Foundation, underlined that the education and management of personnel with sensitive documents have to be improved to prevent such incidents from happening.

Ultimately, it’s down to political will, Mulroy added. Biden needs to ensure America can help Ukraine liberate their country and provide them with the right resources. If Ukraine makes no significant advances, despite having all the means to make changes, damage could be significant politically or otherwise.

Biden has been briefed on Teixeira’s arrest and was initially skeptical of the leak being of great importance. However, with the stakes now higher than ever, the fallout from this leak could have significant ramifications for his administration.
