Biden-Tuberville feud intensifies over Pentagon promotions backlog.
An Alabama Senator Takes on the White House
An Alabama senator is capturing the attention of the White House these days. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has been making headlines and drawing the ire of President Joe Biden and his team. The tension between them has been escalating in recent weeks, with Biden officials openly criticizing the former college football coach.
Stalling Military Promotions
Tuberville has been causing delays in military promotions for months due to his opposition to a Defense Department policy that covers expenses for military personnel seeking abortions. This has resulted in over 250 promotions being affected, and for the first time in over a century, the Marine Corps is without a commandant.
Despite facing backlash, Tuberville, who still identifies himself as “coach,” remains steadfast in his position. He believes that Biden is overstepping his boundaries, stating that “you can’t dictate a law. It’s supposed to go through us,” in an interview with Politico.
Clashing on Multiple Fronts
The disagreement between Tuberville and Biden extends beyond the military promotion issue. Biden frequently mentions the senator in his speeches, highlighting Tuberville’s support for an infrastructure program that he actually voted against, accusing him of Republican hypocrisy.
Another point of contention arose when Tuberville made comments on an Alabama radio station that Democrats interpreted as defending white nationalism. The senator, however, argues that he was criticizing Democrats’ perception that Republicans and conservatives are white nationalists.
The war of words continued, with Biden calling Tuberville “a better football coach than a senator,” and Tuberville firing back that Biden was “a better senator than a president.”
Support and Opposition
While Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) publicly distanced himself from Tuberville by stating his lack of support for the promotions hold, the senator still enjoys some backing from conservatives. Heritage Foundation Vice President Roger Severino believes Tuberville is doing the right thing by challenging the Biden administration’s politicization of the military and its support for abortions.
Severino argues that the Department of Defense policy not only covers expenses for abortions but also pays the criminal penalties for military doctors involved in illegal abortions. He claims that military readiness remains unaffected, pointing to declining recruitment numbers as evidence that Biden’s approach is flawed.
A Battle of Words
The latest salvo from the White House came in the form of a statement from deputy press secretary Andrew Bates, warning that the promotion holdup could lead to a brain drain at the Pentagon and create uncertainty for military members.
In response, the House of Representatives voted for a version of the National Defense Authorization Act that would end the department’s abortion policies and eliminate diversity and inclusion programs. However, National Security Council coordinator John Kirby indicated that Biden is unlikely to sign it.
The debate between Tuberville and the Biden administration has been ongoing for months, and neither side seems willing to back down. Kirby previously expressed concerns about the promotion row, stating that it could have global ramifications.
Tuberville remains firm in his stance, emphasizing in a Fox News op-ed that the Pentagon has been using taxpayer dollars for travel and paid time off for servicemembers and their families to obtain abortions without proper authorization or appropriation from Congress. He warns against politicizing the military, highlighting its role as a nonpolitical institution that has effectively deterred large-scale war since 1945.
