President Joe Biden said Monday that the United States backs Israel‘s right to security while warning against a broader war breaking out with Iran in the Middle East.

The “United States is committed to Israel’s security,” Biden said during an Oval Office bilateral meeting with Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al Sudani after Iran attacked Israel over the weekend.

Biden praised the partnership between the U.S., Israel, and their allies to intercept drones and missiles Iran fired off at Israel on Saturday while also calling for a negotiated ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

“We’re committed to a ceasefire that will bring the hostages home and prevent the conflict from spreading beyond what it already has,” the president said. “We’re also committed to the security of our personnel and our allies, including Iraq,” noting that the two nations “have fought side-by-side” against the Islamic State in recent years.

Sudani further pledged through an interpreter that Iraq would uphold “our humanitarian responsibility about what’s happening in the region.”
