Biden cautions Latino voters against Trump’s appeal as warnings of waning support from crucial demographic emerge
President Joe Biden criticized Donald Trump as a threat to democracy in an interview with Univision, expressing concerns about Trump’s actions following the Capitol riot. Biden highlighted his efforts to secure support from Latino voters. Polls show a close race between Trump and Biden in key battleground states. Biden also addressed immigration and border security issues raised during the interview.
President Joe Biden slammed former President Donald Trump as a primary threat to freedom and democracy in an interview with Univision, the Spanish language network, that will air Tuesday evening.
Biden’s comments against Trump come as he has been working to shore up support with Latino voters ahead of the Nov. 5 election after recent polling has shown the crucial voting bloc may be more amenable to voting for the GOP.
“Donald Trump talk uses phrases like we’re going to eviscerate the Constitution. He’s going to be a dictator on day one,” Biden told host Enrique Acevedo.
The president then excoriated Trump over his actions as the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot occurred after he lost the 2020 election.
“The idea that he would sit in the office — and I’ll show you before you leave — off the Oval Office and watched for hours the attack on the Capitol and the destruction and the mayhem and the people who were killed,” Biden continued. “The police officers who died and called them political heroes, call them patriots. And saying that if he gets elected, he’s going to free them all because they’re being held illegally.”
Polling last month from the American Principles Project of Hispanic voters showed Trump and Biden tied at 46% in a hypothetical matchup in Arizona, a key swing state. In Nevada, another crucial battleground state, showed Biden leading by just two percentage points, 42% to 40%.
An Axios-Ipsos Latino Poll with Noticias Telemundo released this week showed a plurality of Latinos hold an unfavorable view of Biden, 41% found him favorable while 47% found him unfavorable. Trump is seen even less favorable than Biden with 32% finding him favorable and 56% finding him unfavorable.
Acevedo asked Biden how he aimed to solve the border crisis, a top concern for many voters in the U.S. The Axios-Ipsos poll showed crime and gun violence, at 34%, and immigration, at 28%, are among the second-tier concerns for Latino voters. Republican leaders, including Trump, have criticized Biden over his inability to stem the flow of migrants entering the U.S. illegally.
“The first piece of legislation I introduced as president was related to the border. The first one,” Biden said. “I wanted to make sure everything from Dreamers had a path to citizenship, all the way to providing for enough border security people to orderly handle the border, to allow legal immigration and prevent illegal immigration.”
Biden then blasted Trump for pressuring Republican leaders on Capitol Hill to scuttle a bipartisan border deal back in February. Trump opposed the deal because it would give Biden a political victory in a presidential election year.
“What happened was when Trump found out that I liked it and I supported it, and I’d get, quote, credit for it, he got on the phone, not a joke, checked with the Republicans and called them and said, don’t be for it, will benefit Biden,” Biden added. “When the hell would you vote on a major piece of legislation based on whether you benefit somebody that’s in politics? It’s either good or it’s bad. It was a good piece of legislation, and I’m not giving up on it.”
Democrats previously criticized Univision for an interview the network conducted with Trump last year they viewed as a softball interview.
Meanwhile, Trump attacked Biden’s border policies during a campaign stop last week in Michigan, another battleground state that will help determine the election. The Biden administration, declared Trump, was “wrecking our civilization” and “destroying our country.”
However, Biden claimed his team was determining whether he could issue an executive action on closing the southern border.
“There’s no guarantee that I have that power all by myself without legislation,” Biden claimed. “And some have suggested I should just go ahead and try it. And if I get shut down by the court, I get shut down by the court. But we’re trying to work that, work through that right now.”
During the interview, Biden also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the wake of the seven World Central Kitchen aid workers killed by Israel Defense Forces. The deaths of the seven humanitarian workers could mark a watershed moment in the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“I think what he’s doing is a mistake. I don’t agree with his approach,” Biden said of Netanyahu. “I think it’s outrageous that those four, three vehicles were hit by drones and taken out on a highway where it wasn’t like it was along the shore, it wasn’t like there was a convoy moving there.”
Biden then called for a temporary ceasefire between the two opposing forces as more Democrats, moderates and progressives, have pushed for an end to the fighting that began on Oct. 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel.
“What I’m calling for is for the Israelis to just call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks total access to all food and medicine going into the country,” Biden said. “I’ve spoken with everyone from the Saudis to the Jordanians to the Egyptians. They’re prepared to move in. They’re prepared to move this food in. And I think there’s no excuse to not provide for the medical and the food needs of those people. It should be done now.”
