Biden’s approval rating nears lowest point: Poll

President Joe Biden’s approval rating has dropped to a near low during his presidency, according to a new poll. He is struggling to deal with a banking crisis, high inflation, and foreign policy issues on which lawmakers on the same side of the aisle cannot agree. Biden’s current approval rating is just 38%, down from 45% in February and 41% in January.

The latest figure is close to Biden’s lowest approval rating of his presidency of 36% last July amid rising costs of gasoline, groceries, and more throughout the country.

While the Biden administration is focusing on matters such as national security and healthcare, the most significant issue affecting the president’s low approval rating is the economy, with only about a quarter of Americans saying the economy is good or that the country is headed in the right direction, according to the poll.

Few Republicans approve of Biden’s handling of the economy or his job overall as president, while Democrats are more accepting. Among the president’s party, 63% say they approve of his handling of the economy, with 76% approving of his presidency, according to the poll. However, these numbers are lower for Democrats below the age of 45, likely due in part to Biden’s broken promises on environmental protections, such as in Alaska, with his approval of the Willow project.

The Biden administration is currently grappling with concerns about a possible recession, especially after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank, as the president decides when to announce his intentions for the 2024 election. Should Biden run for reelection, as many expect, the economy is likely to play a significant role in the outcome.

Former President Donald Trump and expected challenger Ron DeSantis (R-FL) are expected to press Biden on the economy forcefully if he does run.

The poll of 1,081 adults was conducted from March 16-20 using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, designed to be representative of the U.S. population. According to the Associated Press, the margin of sampling error for all respondents was plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
