Biden’s New Border Crisis: A Surge of Illegal Immigrants From China
The Biden administration is facing another immigration crisis with a surge of Chinese immigrants crossing the southern border amidst growing concerns of drug trafficking.
Customs and Border Protection data shows that Border Patrol apprehended over 4,300 Chinese migrants in the past five months alone, which is more than double the total border encounters in the fiscal year 2022.
The surge in Chinese migrants adds to the challenges at the border that the Biden administration has to deal with, as they have not taken sufficient measures to address migration and drug trafficking issues.
The southern border has seen more than a million migrant encounters this fiscal year, which is a 23% increase from the same period in 2022. Additionally, CBP seized over 50,000 pounds of fentanyl at the southern border in fiscal year 2022.
Republican lawmakers have criticized Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for failing to secure the border and called for his impeachment.
Experts suggest that Chinese migrants are leaving their country due to religious persecution and the excessive COVID-19 lockdown measures. In November 2022, lockdowns led to the death of 44 people from a fire in China. The residents were barricaded in their homes for quarantine.
China has long persecuted the Uyghurs, an ethnic minority group, with more than a million people held in internment camps.
